Two goal Wexford deliver first win
Wexford secured their first points of the season with a 2-0 win over Cabinteely at Stradbrook tonight in the SSE Airtricity First Division.
A close range header from Kyle Robinson put Wexford ahead in the fourth minute while he was again involved when he set up Jack Doherty to strike in front of goal as Wexford ran at the Cabinteely defence in the 61st minute.
Paul Fox received a second yellow card after fouling Cabo’s Zak O’Neill with 15 minutes remaining, but the home side were unable to strike back despite dominating play in the final stages.
Wexford began the game with a high intensity and forced turnovers in possession inside the Cabinteely half, pressing the home-side’s defence and goalkeeper Harry Halwax on his senior debut.
The work soon paid off when Robinson headed the ball past Halwax at point blank range in the fourth minute after captain Karl Manahan delivered a dangerous ball into the Cabinteely box.
The home side also had early chances. Long throw-ins from Daniel Blackbyrne caused chaos in the Wexford defence on two occasions, with Cabinteely calling for a penalty when Kevin Knight was brought down after attempting to get on the end of one such delivery.
Wexford’s Jack Doherty and Cabo’s Marty Waters also felt that had cases in the first half, but Referee Robert Dowling allowed play to continue in each instance.
Robinson and Conor Crowley had chances to double Wexford’s lead as the visitors began to dominate as the half progressed. It wasn’t until the 40th minute that Cabinteely began to grow into the game but were unable to create any clear chances against a solid Wexford defence.
Wexford were still the more threatening side in the second half and their constant pressing paid off once again when they forced Cabinteely into a mistake at the back, allowing Robinson to setup Doherty to hammer the ball home despite protests of offside by the Cabinteely players.
Down 2-0, Cabinteely made several attacking changes to little avail and even when Wexford’s Paul Fox was shown a second yellow after fouling Zak O’Neill in the 73rd minute, Cabinteely could not capitalise despite dominating affairs in the closing stages and Wexford earned a deserved first 3 points of the season in what was new manager Ian Ryan’s second game in charge.
