Trio on target in Cobh win
Cobh Ramblers blew Wexford FC away tonight in their SSE Airtricity First Division game at St. Coleman’s Park. After a poor first half that saw them go 1-0 down, The Rams steamrolled to a 3-1 win.
Goals from Charlie Lyons, Killian Cooper and Ciaran Griffin helped Cobh to victory which means that they move to 8th in the table above city rivals Cork City.
The Rams were slow to start, as the game was quite lethargic and scrappy for most of the first half. It was the visitors that looked more impressive towards the end of the opening 45 minutes.
Jack Doherty and Paul Fox caused numerous problems for Cobh going forward, while Lorcan Fitzgerald and Paul Cleary offered a solid foundation at the back.
It was Fox that managed to break the deadlock. A quick counter from Wexford resulted in a Kyle Robinson attempt bouncing off the post. Fox took his time with the rebound before smashing it into the back of the net. Deservedly, Wexford went into the break leading.
Cobh looked like a completely different side in the second half. They were boosted thanks to an early goal from Charlie Lyons. Another rebounded goal, this time it was Lyons who tapped the ball into an empty net after a Darren Murphy free-kick struck the post.
Cobh ramped up the pressure and were rewarded just after the hour mark when Killian Cooper headed the ball past Jimmy Corcoran after Charlie Lyons saw his header cleared off the line.
In the 75th minute the result was sealed. A deep cross from Darryl Walsh was met by Ian Turner, who looped the ball back into the box for Cobh native Ciaran Griffin to head home.
Wexford did manage to carve out one last chance for themselves in injury time. Lorcan Fitzgerald found himself on the edge of the box and placed a low shot into the bottom corner.
Cobh Ramblers travel to Bray Wanderers next week in hope of climbing up the table again, while Wexford host Athlone Town. Ian Ryan’s men are still chasing a second victory this season.
