Early own-goal sees Longford defeat Wexford
Longford defeated Wexford 1-0 at Bishopsgate this evening in what was their third consecutive league win to further secure their fourth place position in the LOI First Division.
Pressure from De Town resulted in an unfortunate Joe Manly own-goal to see the home side ahead on 17 minutes.
Both sides had chances to score later in the fixture but there would be no more goals and Longford would hold on for another three points.
Wexford were quick off the blocks and moved the ball with pace going forward to put the Longford backline under pressure early on.
The visitors created a few half-chances in those opening stages, with Thomas Considine's curling effort on 2 minutes coming closest to goal.
Meanwhile, in-form Longford hitman Jordan Adeyemo was left to chase speculative balls up front for the home side though they gradually grew into the game.
De Town would take the lead on 17 minutes when they broke from midfield at speed and Sam Verdon took a shot from inside the visitors' box and hit the the left post.
Unfortunately for Wexford the ball would hit covering defender Joe Manly as it rebounded off the woodwork and ended up in the back of the net to put Longford ahead.
The home team would see a lot of the ball after scoring but failed to create any clear chances for the remainder of the half.
Wexford relied on through balls to Ger Shortt but couldn't beat De Town's high line without breaching the offside line.
The Slaney-siders did conclude the first period in a strong position though, winning three consecutive corners to trouble the opposing defence.
Harry Groome came very close with what looked like an attempt at a cross from deep and forced Longford 'keeper Luke Dennison to rise high to stop it from entering the top left corner before half-time.
Wexford came out on top after the restart and came close to equalising on 47 minutes, after Ger Shortt had his effort deflected by Dennison, Conor Crowley should have done better with the follow up.
Several chances followed for the visitors while Jordan Adeyemo and Dean McMenamy had attempts on goal halted by a determined Wexford defence at the other end as play opened up.
The game would go on to produce a few more chances for both sides but neither proved clinical enough to take them and Longford remained ahead until the final whistle.
