Athlone impress in win over Cobh
Athlone Town earned their first win of the season with a commanding 5-2 win over Cobh Ramblers in Lissywollen tonight.
Braces from Carlton Ubaezuonu and Thomas Oluwa as well as a goal from Daniel Dobbin earned the five for Athlone. Jack Larkin and Jake Hegarty got the goals for Cobh.
Athlone didn’t take too long to get going in this one. Just 11 minutes in, Gary Armstrong played a lovely through ball for Ubaezuonu. Ubaezuonu went through on goal and kept his composure, slotting it by Sean Barron to break the deadlock.
Cobh looked like they were going to make a game of it in the 19th minute when a loose ball fell to Sean Larkin outside the box and he struck it first time. His right footed curler found the top corner, a fine strike from the Cobh man.
Athlone responded well though. Just three minutes later, Thomas Oluwa was played through down the left hand side and bore down on goal, eventually chipping Barron with his left foot.
After the restart Athlone took little time to get going. In the 48th minute, Oluwa received a cross and held off the defender well. He squared it to Ubaezuonu, who took a touch and slotted into an empty net to set Athlone on course for three points.
Cobh didn’t lie down just yet. In the 55th minute, Issa Karebo drove forward from right back and slipped through Danny O’Connell. Andrew Skerritt came to close him down and didn’t seize the ball, which instead bundled its way to Jake Hegarty for a tap-in.
Athlone continued to show resilience though and responded five minutes later. Daniel Dobbin picked up a loose ball in the centre of the park and drove forward, eventually slotting it into the bottom corner from outside the box to restore the two goal lead.
The cherry was placed on top in the 67th minute when Oluwa received the ball on the right and cut inside, curling it around Barron with his left into the bottom corner, capping off a man of the match performance.
It could have been six twice in injury time when Blake Ryan skinned a defender and put Success Edogun through, who hit it straight at Barron. A phase of play later, a cross to the back stick was met by Cian Kelly, who sent it over.
Nonetheless, Athlone should be thrilled. They’ll be hoping this can be a springboard for more points.

And we're off.
The teams are out. Kickoff is nigh.
Dark clouds overhead. Looks like a wet one.
The teams are in.
Both teams should view tonight as an opportunity to pick up a win, given each one has been poor so far.
