Match Report
Groome and Dobbs deliver for Wexford
Goals from Harry Groome and Aaron Dobbs secured a 2-1 win for Wexford FC against a ten-man Athlone Town at Ferrycarrig Park tonight.
Glen McAuley’s late consolation was the only bright spark for the visitors as Cian Kelly saw red for a second yellow due to simulation.
Athlone provided the game with the earliest chances. McAuley came close, but fired his effort over the bar.
Thomas Oluwa looked like an early threat, his physicality proving difficult for Wexford’s back three but he failed to convert any chances.
The remainder of the half belonged to Wexford.
Dinny Corcoran came closest for the hosts with an effort from close range saved by Michael Schlingermann, denying Corcoran of scoring his 100th career goal.
Just after the half hour mark the breakthrough came for the hosts.
Some nice link up play between Aaron Dobbs and Corcoran resulted in Dobbs’s strike being palmed into the oncoming Harry Groome who volleyed the ball into an open goal.
Things went from bad to worse for Athlone as Cian Kelly was given his marching orders after receiving a second yellow card for simulation.
Wexford started the second-half the way they had finished with Corcoran again coming close from inside the six-yard box.
His strike partner Dobbs would find the back of the net soon after his miss when Thomas Considine cut the ball across the box for the Wexford native to tap in, doubling their lead.
Ian Ryan’s men continued to search for a third goal but it came to no avail.
Instead, with a minute left the visitors would get one back. Gary McAuley found himself all alone inside the box to slip the ball past Paul Hunt, creating a nervy finish at Ferrycarrig.
Tonight’s result means that Wexford move up to second in the table just a point behind Waterford. They make the trip to the RSC next Friday for a massive southeastern derby.
As for Athlone, the search for their first point of the season goes on. Next Friday sees Cobh Ramblers travel to Lissywollen.
