Match Report

Rovers claim record unbeaten run

Champions Shamrock Rovers broke their own record for most consecutive games unbeaten in Ireland’s top-flight, as they ran out comfortable winners 3-0 at home to Waterford at Tallaght Stadium.

Rovers have gone 31 games unbeaten across the past three seasons, and cruised to victory courtesy of goals from Rory Gaffney, Gary O’Neill and Daniel Mandriou to go top of the Premier Division table.

The match fell in the window of a social media boycott, as the two teams joined other professional sporting organisations across the UK and Ireland to make a stand against tackling ongoing online abuse and discrimination.

Stephen Bradley’s men didn’t need to get out of second gear, as they completely outclassed a helpless Waterford side that named just four substitutions and were caught chasing shadows throughout.

Manager Kevin Sheedy refused to fill his bench in a bizarre protest against the standard of officiating in the League of Ireland’s Premier Division, that seemed counterproductive and understandably outraged their supporters.

The hosts took the lead after just 13 minutes through Gaffney, who broke the deadlock with a powerful finish after being fed by Mandroiu.

O’Neill doubled Rovers’ advantage as Mandroiu’s free kick was rolled to Dylan Watts, and his shot was blocked but was able to find O’Neill, who was on hand to turn the ball home via a deflection.

Things went from bad to worse for relegation threatened Waterford as they conceded a third before the hour mark.

Influential Mandroiu managed to get on the scoresheet himself, after being teed up by Max Murphy, in what was a brilliant counter attacking move that started from the Waterford penalty area.

With the game done and dusted, Rovers had one eye on next week’s huge top of the table clash against title rivals St Patrick’s Athletic, shown by the substitutions of key players Watts and Mandroiu during the 55th minute.

The result means Shamrock Rovers lead the league by three points but have played a game more than second placed St Patrick’s Athletic, who are in action later today away to Sligo Rovers.

In direct contrast, Waterford remain ninth with just six points picked up from nine games as the pressure continues to mount on boss Sheedy.

  • Full time: Shamrock Rovers 3-0 Waterford - History created at Tallaght Stadium as Rovers break their own record of 31 unbeaten consecutive matches in Ireland's top flight but today's game was a complete mismatch and showed worrying signs for Waterford supporters who were completely outplayed.

  • 88'

Neil Farrugia seems to have unfortunately pulled a hamstring and is off the pitch but cannot be replaced as Shamrock Rovers have used all of their subs.

  • 87'

Dean Williams spurns a great chance to make it four as he hits the side netting. Waterford are just going through the motions and the two sides look worlds apart, the game seems more of a training match than a competitive top flight affair.

  • 80'

Corner to Shamrock Rovers is whipped in and the header from Scales hits the side netting with the keeper rooted to the spot.

  • 78'

Complete domination by Shamrock Rovers who comfortably lead, with Waterford looking a side that have seemingly given up and look susceptible to conceding a further goal.

  • 69'

Shamrock Rovers substitution: Darragh Nugent replaces Rory Gaffney

  • 69'

Substitute midfielder Chris McCann is yellow carded.

  • 68'

Shamrock Rovers substitution: Neil Farrugia replaces Max Murphy.

  • 65'

Shamrock Rovers continue to dominate proceedings as Waterford struggle to even get on the ball in this truly one sided affair.

  • 59'

Shamrock Rovers defender Sean Hoare commits a foul just outside the box and is booked.

  • 59'

Rovers go close to going further in front as Burke misses a sitter inside the six yard box. No contest here at Tallaght Stadium.

  • 55'

GOAL! Shamrock Rovers extend their lead as Daniel Mandroiu finishes a nicely worked move by the home side.

  • 49'

Another big chance for Shamrock Rovers as Gaffney couldn't quite reach a ball that zipped across the face of goal. It seems it's a matter of when not if Rovers will extend their lead.

  • 46'

Katlego Mashigo is booked for Waterford for a foul inside the Shamrock Rovers half.

  • 46'

Back underway in the second half.

  • 45'

Half time: Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Waterford - A comfortable lead for the hosts who are well on course to break the record of most consecutive unbeaten matches in Ireland\'s Premier Division, with their 31st match unbeaten run set to be extended today. The champions are in cruise control and lead courtesy of goals from Rory Gaffney and Gary O\'Neill, whilst problems off the pitch are leading to problems on it for Waterford as they look disjointed and comfortably second best.

  • 45'

The fourth official has indicated a minimum of three additional minutes.

  • 36'

Substitution for Shamrock Rovers: Graham Burke replaces the injured Aaron Greene.

  • 33'

GOAL! Gary O\'Neill doubles Shamrock Rovers\' advantage as the free kick is blocked and the ball falls to O\'Neill who side foots the ball into the net courtesy of a deflection. Looks an own goal to me but O'Neill will claim it.

  • 31'

Greene breaks down the left and is chopped down by Tunmise Sobowale on the edge of the penalty area and the referee gives a yellow card to the Waterford captain. The winger is still down receiving treatment.

  • 27'

Waterford survive the relentless pressure for now as the goalkeeper is impeded during the corner and they can rebuild with a free kick.

  • 27'

Brilliant effort from distance by Gaffney but the effort is matched by a wonderful save by Martin who tips the ball over the crossbar for a corner.

  • 24'

Danny Mandroui has a good effort from a tight angle that just glides wide.

  • 24'

Aaron Greene puts in a delicious delivery which almost picked out Gaffney but Waterford survive courtesy of brilliant last ditch defending.

  • 21'

The away side have responded well since falling behind and have dominated possession and territory during the last two minutes.

  • 16'

The ball is punched away by keeper Paul Martin and Waterford will try to get out of their own half and find a way back into this game.

  • 16'

Shamrock have a free kick deflected just over the bar and they have a corner as their early dominance continues.

  • 13'

GOAL! Rory Gaffney breaks the deadlock with a good strike as he is allowed to turn inside the box and punish a Waterford defence that was caught out by an early shot from a drop ball after the ball hit the referee.

  • 9'

Waterford manager Kevin Sheedy has named just four substitutes in a protest against the standard of officiating in the League of Ireland's Premier Division.

  • 7'

Poor delivery from the corner and Shamrock look to build from the back. Lively start to proceedings here at Tallaght Stadium.

  • 7'

Corner to Waterford, good play down the right by Waite and a decent ball into the area is cleared behind.

  • 4'

Lee Grace's header is cleared off the line and they come again through Gaffney's header which is saved. Dominant start by Shamrock Rovers.

  • 4'

Corner to Shamrock Rovers after a promising start made by the hosts.

  • 1'

    We're underway.

  • The teams are onto the pitch and we're just a few moments from kick off.

  • Shamrock Rovers have named their strongest possible side as they look to break the record (30) of games unbeaten in the top flight.

  • Waterford have surprisingly named just four substitutes on their bench but are unchanged from last week's defeat to Dundalk.

  • The weather has not been kind to us with the temperature at 11 degrees celcius, as the rain pours down with winds of around 25 mph.

  • Kevin Sheedy’s side come into the game off the back of a 3-0 home defeat to Dundalk that condemned them to their sixth loss in just eight games.

  • On the other hand, Waterford sit in ninth place after eight games, having picked up just six points from a maximum 24 this season. They currently lie in the relegation play-off position but will know a much-needed win today will help them climb the table and boost their survival bid.

  • Last time out the champions equalled the all-time league record of going 30 games without defeat as they beat Finn Harps 2-0 at Finn Park. It took Stephen Bradley’s men until the 74th minute to break the deadlock following a hotly contested free kick and a goalkeeping error that led to Rory Gaffney pouncing to put Rovers ahead. Sean Hoare headed home ten minutes from time to seal the record win, and all eyes will be on them to see if they can make history in today’s game.

  • The match falls in the window of a social media boycott, as professional sporting organisations across the UK and Ireland make a stand against tackling ongoing online abuse and discrimination.

  • In second place, the Tallaght Stadium side need a win to keep up the pace with leaders St. Patrick’s Athletic, who are ahead of them only on goal difference and are in action later today away to Sligo Rovers.
