Match Report
Rovers miss out in Europe
Shamrock Rovers picked up a well deserved 2-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier. Goals from Richie Towell and a first half Graham Burke penalty were enough to give Rovers the win.
It would however be an unlucky night for Rovers, as Vladimir Weiss struck in the 73rd minute to break the hearts of the home side as Slovan advanced to the next round, winning 3-2 on aggregate.
Chances were few and far between for the hosts, Ronan Finn managed the first shot on target for the Rovers in the 58th minute. The Hoops only managed three shots on target over the 90 minutes.
Graham Burke’s first half penalty was the only scoring attempt for his side in the 45 minutes. A fantastic ball by Gary O’Neill played Burke in behind, but the Rovers man was brought down in the area and the referee took no time in pointing to the spot. The forward made no mistake sending the keeper the wrong way.
Slovan were the better team in the opening half but failed to deliver in front of the goal. A fantastic double save by Alan Mannus kept the score line at 1-0 as Slovan failed to register another clear cut chance in the opening 45 minutes.
The home side kept the pressure on in the second half but could not make their chances count, Richie Towell managed to double his teams lead with a fantastic strike from outside the box just after the hour mark as Rovers persistence paid off. Ronan Gaffney played the midfielder in, who fired a rocket into the top corner from outside the area.
While spirits were high after Shamrock Rovers levelled the tie less than ten minutes later, Weiss broke into the Rovers area and fired a low shot into the bottom corner past Alan Mannus.
Stephen Bradley threw the kitchen sink at the tie after the Slovan goal, late chances by Roberto Lopes, Aaron Greene and Liam Scales failed to deliver an equaliser as Shamrock Rovers bow out of the Champions League Qualifiers.
