Duffy delivers as Dundalk advance

Dundalk secured their place in the second round of the Europa Conference League thanks to Michael Duffy’s solitary second half goal ensuring a 1-0 over Newtown in Oswestry this evening.

The Lilywhites proved too strong for their Welsh counterparts over the course of the two legs; and will more than likely face FCI Levadia Tallinn in the second round. While the hard work had been done in Oriel Park last week the win was morale-boosting and needed.

The first half saw the home side look to restore some parity to the four-goal deficit and James Davies came close when he latched onto a mistake in the area by Patrick McEleney. However his blushes were spared as Boyle cleared the advancing strikers attack.

Aaron Williams also went close for the home side however the Dundalk defence cleared the danger. Both sides had great opportunities to break the deadlock in quick succession. Duffy hit a low effort that was well saved by Jones in the Newtown net but immediately from the counterattack James Rowan couldn't get his effort on target.

The best chance of the opening period fell to the Lilywhites as McEleney let the ball play past him from an initial Duffy cross and Daniel Kelly's effort went well over the bar.

Dundalk took the game to the hosts in the second half and McEleney spotting Jones off his goal took a speculative effort from a free-kick that struck the post from forty yards. It was his Derry counterpart that would get on the score sheet as Michael Duffy broke from the halfway line and slotted the ball calmly under Jones to open the scoring. Dundalk continued to press with Daniel Kelly and Ryan O’Kane both going close for the away side but neither could add to their sides tally while Newtown forced two great saves from Alessio Abibi as Nick Ruston forced a finger-tip save from the Dundalk keeper. Dundalk substitute Ole Erik Midtskogen had a great chance to add a second late on but his effort flew over the bar.

A professional and experienced performance from Vinny Perth’s men as they advance to the next round and with that pocket 300,000 in the process and even for a club like Dundalk that is a welcome boost at this stage of the season.

In this competition chances to advance become more difficult as the rounds progress for Dundalk however they have one round down and now three to go.
