O’Sullivan hat-trick powers Maynooth win
Paddy O’Sullivan proved to be the hero for Maynooth University Town tonight as it was his hat-trick which led the Kildare side to victory at the Maynooth University campus.
Three first half goals proved crucial and left the visiting Malahide United with too much to do in the second half.
In an entertaining game, Maynooth stormed into an early lead through the influential O’Sullivan, one they never looked like relinquishing. Cillian Duffy looked lively for the hosts, who completely controlled play in the early stages.
The best chance Malahide had to level the game came a few minutes later when a long ball found Sampson in acres of space but he failed to lob the keeper. Maynooth sustained pressure, and from a corner kick O’Sullivan reacted first to a shot off the post.
The best move of the game came on the 40th minute as a wonder pass from the Maynooth left back fell to O’Sullivan who displayed great technique to volley past the keeper.
Malahide tried hard to get back into the game, and showed great endeavour but as Maynooth broke clear Killian Duffy headed to the back of the net for the icing on the cake.
University Town held on to go through to the next round and will pose a threat to their future opposition
