Match Report

Peamount dampen Rovers Return with scoreless draw

Amanda Budden was the hero as her shot stopping exploits, particularly in the last fifteen minutes, saw her side secure a scoreless draw against League leaders Peamount United.

Karen Duggan saw her last minute penalty saved but that was sandwiched between two top drawer saves from Kate Mooney and Becky Watkins as the keeper earned her clean sheet.

The cagey encounter was devoid of any really quality in the early moments as both teams stifled each other out for most of the encounter with both sides being so familiar with each other with former Peamount United players Aine O’Gorman, Lauren Kelly and Alannah McEvoy named in the Rovers squad.

Becky Watkins set the tone for her performance in the early exchanges as she proved to be a thorn on the right side for the home side in the early exchanges. Her cross finding Erin McLaughlin who can’t get her effort past the lunge from a Rovers defender.

McLaughlin almost got on the end of a lovely ball from Sadhbh Doyle but the assistant referee had their flag up to end the move.

At the other end Lia O’Leary had the freedom of PRL Park as she strode forward down the left wing. She was unable to keep her cross in play though as it drifted across the crossbar of Niamh Reid Burke.

The last play of the first half saw Rover’s best opportunity as Jaime Thompson floated in a corner. Shauna Fox got ahead of the Peamount keeper but her effort bounced just wide of the right hand post as the referee blew the half time whistle.

The nerves were evident in both sides in the early moments of the second half and it was twenty minutes into the half when Tara O’Hanlon combined well with Karen Duggan to burst into the box and when she hit the ground the referee waved away any protests for a penalty.

Moments later it was Kate Mooney who was unlucky with her glancing header dropping to the right hand side of the post with Amanda Budden in trouble.

With twenty minutes remaining Erin McLaughlin spotted Budden off her line and tried a long range effort but the Rovers keeper managed to back pedal and secure the ball with little fuss.

Peamount continued to press for the opener as they recycled a poor corner to create havoc in the Rovers box, a header dropping to Becky Watkins but last gasp defending from the visitors keeps it level.

With under a quarter hour remaining Budden once again came to the rescue of Rovers. The keeper produced a phenomenal save from Mooney after a fine passing move from the home team gave the forward all the time in the world on the right hand side of the box. Budden was equal to the low effort and knocked it out for a corner.

With two minutes remaining in the game the opportunity finally arrived for the home side. Sadhbh Doyle was upended in the box, the referee pointed to the spot and Peamount captain Karen Duggan stepped up. Budden who was in inspired form was equal to it and got down to her bottom left corner to force it around the post and keep it level.

The final act was once again an excellent save from Budden after Becky Watkins threatened to hit the back of the net to ensure the spoils were shared.
