Bohs second half clinic secures victory
Bohemians put Wexford Youths to the sword in Ferrycarrig Park with a clinical second half display to hand the home side a 3-0 hammering in their own backyard as Bohemians beat Wexford for the first time in their history.
The first half yielded very little goalmouth action, a tame free kick from 25 yards by Freya de Mange, caught by Bohs keeper Rachael Kelly, and a blocked shot after an impressive dribble by winger Abbie Brophy in the last minute of the half was all Wexford had to show in the first 45.
Bohs hadn’t fared much better, an optimistic volley by Rachael Doyle which never looked to trouble Maeve Williams in net, split a number of promising but ultimately futile crosses and pull backs by Bohs before the interval.
Wexford were obviously missing their top scorer Rianna Jarrett who is usually so crucial to their build up play as well as in front of goal, and Brophy who has been so lively in recent matches hardly had a kick without her partner in crime in the opening half.
Nerves had settled at the beginning of the second half as chances began to appear for both sides. Louise Corrigan headed wide at the back post after finding herself unmarked from a corner just three minutes after the restart. A couple of minutes later Bohs captain Erica Burke ran clear but found her chip blocked down by a sliding Williams who was quick off her line to deal with the danger.
In the 55th minute Brophy missed a huge chance to put the home side ahead when the ball found its way across the Bohs penalty area right into her path but the number 7 side footed the ball high over the bar in what would be Wexford’s best chance of the night.
Whether it was the descending evening chill or half time rousing, Bohs were certainly lifted in the second half, producing a fine performance that began with an excellent strike by Sarah Rowe who cut in from the right hand side to play a quick one-two with Kira Bates Crosbie before whipping a left footed strike in off the far post to give Bohs the lead in a chaotic second half 70 minutes in.
Brophy, who was very lively in the second part, then went through five minutes later and her outside the boot effort was partially stopped by the keeper Kelly before being cleared off the line by the scampering Bohs defence
The game was put beyond Wexford’s reach after 77 minutes however, when skipper Burke broke quickly down the right and pulled the ball back across the face for substitute Niamh Prior to find the back of the unguarded net.
Mia Dodd put the icing on the cake when she nicked the ball from a dawdling Wexford defence and drove forward, slotting the ball past Williams into the bottom right corner to secure a statement victory for Bohemians.
Kelly in goal cemented her clean sheet with an excellent point blank stop in the last moments to deny Wexford’s Aine Walsh.
This victory will set up Bohs to push towards the title race and keep some space between them and todays opponents, whereas Wexford, who looked lost without Jarrett to lead them up front slip to yet another disappointing defeat this season.

Kelly cements her clean sheet with a point blank stop of Aine Walsh’s shot
Bohs have been superb this second half and will fully deserve these three points when they arrive after the two mood injury time remaining
Dodd wins a strong tackle as Wexford try to play out and drives forward before slotting home into the corner to make it 3-0 to the Dublin side
De Mange’s powerful strike from range flies just wide of the top corner
Foul on the edge of the box means Conlon is the first in the book for Wexford
Burke breaks clear down the right and skips past a Wexford challenge before pulling back for substitute Niamh Prior to finish into the unguarded net and double bohs advantage
The more this game has heated up! It’s really end to end now
Dodd is the first to go in the referees notebook this evening
Brophy goes one on one and sees her outside the boot effort partially saved then cleared off the line for the score to stay at 1-0 to the visitors
Sarah Rowe scores with a magnificent strike in off the post from the right hand side of the area. A quick break by Bohs and a quick on two between Rowe and Kira Bates Crosbie who set ball for the Bohs forward to strike into the net
Burke stands up Sinnott one on one at the edge of the Youths box but her low shot is straight at Williams
Shot by Nicola Sinnott from the edge of the box is pulled wide of the right hand post, chances are befalling both teams now
Snapshot volley by Dodd flashes across the goal but lacks the necessary direction
Brophy misses an absolute sitter as the ball somehow finds its way across the Bohs box right into the path of Brophy just mere yards out but the Wexford number 7 sidefoots over to the home crowds despair
Great chance for Bohs striker Erica Burke who runs clear but her chipped effort clips the body of the on rushing Williams and Wexford clear the danger
Louise Corrigan heads wide at the back stick from a corner, the first good chance for either team they search for an opener
Halftime whistle blows in a game so far without much incident, proven by the absence of injury time, both teams look a little afraid to commit too many forward or make the risky pass and it’s difficult to say how this one might pan out, someone needs to take the initiative here. HT Wexford Youths 0-0 Bohemians
Excellent run by Brophy into the area but her shot is met with the body of a Bohs defender and is cleared
A free kick by Freya de Mange leads to Wexford’s first effort on target but in truth never troubled Bohs keeper Racheal Kelly
A ferocious Doyle corner calls on Maeve Williams to punch clear from the Wexford front post
Miss-cued cross by Sarah Rowe but Bohs starting to push the harder, although it is still not causing Wexford many issues
First attempt on goal, an ambitious and harmless volleyed effort by Bohs midfielder Rachel Doyle
Cagey opening 25, but a pull back by Mia Dodd right across Wexford’s goal which was well defended has given this game its first sign of life
It just isn’t happening for either team so far, hopefully there will be a little more actions as the players shadows continue to stretch
Very little to report in the opening minutes, as Wexford earn the first corner of the game but it comes to nothing
With no Rianna Jarrett tonight Wexford must do this tonight without their top scorer and player who has been so crucial to their recent form, Emily Corbet who is deputising has big boots to fill
Bohemians have never beaten Wexford since their conception in 2020, losing all 7 games between the sides up to this point in time
Both teams are looking to make this three wins on the bounce, so you can expect two teams high on confidence coming into this one
We are just under way here in the sunshine at Ferrycarrig park, Wexford Youths host Bohemians this evening and the warm May sun hopefully will inspire some exciting football as welcoming as the weather
