Jarett & Corbett Combine To Keep Wexford Unbeaten

A dream home debut and return for Wexford’s front two gave the home side a 3-1 win over Sligo Rovers this evening.

A homecoming and the start of a new love affair, that’s what Wexford Youths had upfront which was the difference as they beat Sligo Rovers 3-1 at Ferrycarrig Park, with the returning Rianna Jarett and last season’s top scorer Emily Corbet both scoring, coming after a brilliant strike from Sarah Kiernan had ruled out Michaela Lawrence’s opener.

Wexford dominated the opening period of the game, in and out of possession, allowing Sligo to play out of the back and pressing high. They should really have taken the lead in the 7th minute as well. A lovely cross in from Ciara Rossiter was met by Abbie Brophy but her volley crashed back off of the crossbar.

The home side finally made their pressure count when they scored the opening goal in the 21st minute. A looping Rossiter cross was allowed bounce and Michaela Lawrence was first to it, connecting with a lovely half volley, guiding the ball into the bottom left corner.

Sligo’s first half was worsened when Casey Howe, who had been their liveliest player, was forced off with an injury in the 39th minute.

The second half was just underway when Sarah Kiernan produced one of the goals of the season already. Abbie Brophy broke forward for Wexford but a heavy touch gave the ball to Kiernan, who struck the ball just inside the home side’s half, sailing over the helpless Williams, stunning everyone and bringing Sligo back into a game where they had been second best.

Wexford should really have gotten back in front only a few minutes later when Rianna Jarett played Rossiter through on goal, however, her finish was just wide of the goal, agonisingly rolling past the right-hand post.

Kiernan could have had another goal of the season contender in the 65th minute, meeting a loose ball and striking a fierce shot towards the top corner but this time, Maeve Williams matched it with an equally superb save to tip it over.

With an eye on the World Cup towards the end of the year, Rianna Jarett returned to Wexford to try play her way back into the thoughts of Vera Pauw, and her first goal back will show what she offers. In the 70th minute, Abbie Brophy showed some real trickery down the right hand side and put in a delighted cross, which Jarrett was only too happy to head home and put Wexford put in front.

The game was wrapped up 6 minutes later when a lovely ball over the top found the on-running Rossiter yet again. This time, she squared it instead of shooting and Emily Corbet stabbed the ball home to open her account for the Youths.
