Match Report

Hoops Keep Unbeaten Record Alive

Shamrock Rovers maintained their unbeaten record in the LOIW as they saw out Galway United 2-1 in Tallaght Stadium this evening.

Rovers were held at bay by for the bulk of the first half, an astute Galway defence stifling the hosts’ creativity in the center of the park.

However, it was Áine O’Gorman and Abbie Larkin who delivered a hammer blow to Phil Trill’s side, scoring in quick succession on either side of the half. Those two goals were enough to see out the win, Gemma McGuinness dragging a goal back for Galway in the 69th minute.

Bar a few notable exceptions, Shamrock Rovers have made a habit of starting their home games at a relatively slow pace this season and tonight proved to be no different. The hosts struggled to get ticking for the opening half, their creativity stifled by a compact Galway line-up that routinely denied the likes of Aoife Kelly and Lia O’Leary any space on the ball to forge any goalscoring opportunities.

It was in fact the visitors who had the best chance of the opening half-hour, captain Lynsey McKey producing a fantastic curling effort from the edge of Rovers’ box, that just didn’t veer goal-bound soon enough, the shot flying just inches wide of Amanda Budden’s top-right corner.

Phil Trill’s side were dealt the cruelest of blows on the brink of half-time, having defended so well they were suddenly carved to pieces in a matter of seconds. Abbie Larkin threaded a neat ball into the feet of Áine O’Gomran who swiveled onto her right foot and buried the ball into the bottom left corner, putting her side in the driving seat.

Galway were forced to abandon their counter-attacking game plan as they went in search of an equaliser and were almost immediately punished for those new open-ended tactics.

Lia O’Leary broke down the left wing in the 49th minute and drilled in a low cross that was snuffed out by Jamie Erickson. The Canadian’s clearance fell straight to the feet of Abbie Larkin, the number seven finishing cooly from six yards out to make it 2-0 and put the game seemingly out of sight.

Gemma McGuinness pulled one back for Galway in the 69th minute, taking the ball down in the Rovers’ box and slotting home into the bottom left-hand corner, her shot rattling the inside of the post before rippling off the back of the net.

Galway were unable to capitalise on that lifeline, Rovers seeing out the game fairly comfortably to keep the pressure on league leaders Peamount United who currently hold a one-point advantage over the challengers,

The win will bode well for The Hoops as they prepare for the Dublin Derby next week in Dalymount, a tantalizing fixture given the last match saw a new LOIW attendance record.

Galway will look to rebound next week against Shelbourne at home, having already beat the reigning champions in Tolka Park in March.

O\'Gorman lifts in a cross from a corner and Berlin does well to command a crowded six yard box and leap up to collect the ball.

  • 34'

Larkin catches the ball on the edge of the box but is unable to keep her shot down as it fizzes into the seating of the South Stand.

  • 30'

McEvoy breaks down the right wing and floats in a cross that's vastly overhit and evades the head of Larkin in the Galway box.

  • 19'

Bar last week's game against DLR Waves, Rovers have made a slight habit of starting their games off slow and tonight seems no different. Galway have done a good job at staying compact and preventing any sizeable chances for the hosts.

  • 14'

First big chance for Galway, Lynsey McKey producing a dangerous curling effort from the left side of the Rovers' box, her shot unable to veer towards goal quick enough as it flys inches away from Amanda Budden's left post.

  • 10'

McEvoy tees the ball up for Abbie Larkin on the edge of the box, Larkin's effort underwhelming as Berlin is able to get down and save comfortably.

  • 5'

Jessica Gargan sends in a cross from the right had flank that's just a tad overhit, Alannah McEvoy unable to make contact as the ball falls comfortably into Jessica Berlin's hands.

  • 1'

And we're off! The hosts get things underway here in Tallaght.

  • Two changes in Galway's starting XI after their 2-0 loss to Peamount United, Abbie Callanan and Roisin Jacob replacing Anna Fahey and Aoife Thompson.

  • Jaime Thompson misses out on a place in the Rovers' starting XI, having sustained a knock against Athlone Town two weeks ago. Shauna Fox's continued absence forces the home side to move away from their preferred three at the back and switch to a more traditional 4-3-3 that was debuted against DLR Waves-no changes have been made in the starting XI from that game.

  • O'Neill says he expects Galway to prove themselves as worthy opponents this evening: “They’re a very, very tough side to play against. They don’t give you a second on the ball. They chase everything down. “There were two issues against DLR where suddenly a ball down the throat can cause you trouble and it’s something that we’ll be working on to try and deal with. “They’ve good players like Gemma McGuinness and Jenna Slattery, so there is good quality in the side and it’s a game where we’re going to have to be fully at it if we want to get anything out of it.”

  • The hosts come off a nail-biting 4-3 win against DLR Waves last weekend, responding in devastating fashion to an early deficit by making it 4-1 at the interval, and then nearly throwing it all way as they conceded two-quick fire goals in the second half. Speaking on the match, manager Collie O'Neill insisted he was happy with his side's performances despite the stumbles late on: "I still just judged the game on the performance itself and the performance from the players I thought was very, very good," he said. "The only part we lacked was that we weren’t clinical enough in front of the goal. I think we had three one vs ones and the game should have really have been put to bed at that stage. But I just judged us on the performance and the performance was really, really good.”

  • The reverse fixture in April ended in a 1-1 draw, Jaime Thompson scoring late on to cancel out Gemma McGuinness' first-half strike and salvage a point for Rovers.

  • Evening folks and welcome along to this evening's coverage of Shamrock Rovers vs Galway United. Rovers look to continue their unbeaten start to the season as we enter the second round of LOIW fixtures, The Hoops sitting four points adrift of league leaders Peamount United with a game in hand. Galway come into the fixture in a rich vein of form, boasting three wins from their last four matches and having picked up wins against the likes of Shelbourne this season.
