Corbett Rounds Off Victory For Youths
Emily Corbet struck late again to ensure Wexford Youths brushed past Cork City 2-0 on a sunshine laden evening at Turner’s Cross.
A couple of early saves were needed from keepers Williams for Wexford and McCarthy for Cork as shots came in from the angle which required saving, both were up to the task and the early minutes remained goalless despite both teams threatening. The game was quite open and perhaps it was a good indicator of both sides lack of a clinical edge so far this season that neither were able to open the scoring.
Emily Corbet had the best chance to score in the half as she somehow managed to find a way past the Cork backline and put herself through with only the keeper to beat, but her half volleyed strike was straight at McCarthy who batted it away to safety.
Wexford did manage to go into the lead however, on 37 minutes, after a number of half chances were fluffed, though not by their own boot as Alix Mendez turned a dangerous cross by Michaela Lawrence into her own net just as it began to look like Cork may go into halftime unscathed.
Abbie Brophy had a clipped effort from the edge of the area sail just over the bar right on halftime that looked like it might just dip in under the crossbar, but the sides went in with only the single goal to separate them.
Eva Mangan had a good strike from the edge of the box go just over the bar in what was Cork’s first effort of the second half 55 minutes in as Cork came out of the blocks well once again, but their lack of goal threat was visible every time they attacked.
Despite Cork domination, they had almost no more goalmouth action for the rest of the half and it was Wexford who grabbed the second goal of the game when Corbet got her boot in front of her marker to direct a cross from the right hand side up over McCarthy in goal and into the net, putting the game beyond a Cork side who couldnt take advantage over their periods in the ascendency.
Mangan clipped the crossbar in the last minute of normal time, but Cork yet again this season were held to a shutout, their inability to score being such a hindrance if they ever look to get off the foot of the table.
The two sides meet again on Wednesday night, but hopes can’t be high in the Cork camp after another goalless display by the home side leaving them still on just a solitary point 10 games into this season

Full Time here in Cork as City are subjected to their ninth defeat of the season with Wexford Youths running out 2-0 winners. Cork dominated much of the second half but failed to capitalise in that and an Emily Corbet goal in the 82nd minute was enough to put the game beyond the home side after Mendez's own goal gave the visitors the lead in the first half.
Clancy picks up a booking for kicking the ball away
Mangan hits the crossbar from a few yards out as Cork look for a consolation, Mangan has been Cork's main goal threat this evening but hasn't been able to convert yet
Yellow for McNamara after a tactical foul to stop a Wexford attack
Wexford had begun to up the pace and that goal always seems likely once they got at a Cork defence that has been unsettled all game long
Corbet gets her boot in front of her marker and directs a cross from the right hand side beautifully into the goal looping over McCarthy to double Wexford lead
Break in play as McCarthy gets some treatment, Cork have dominated this half but need to have something to show for their effort by the full time whistle
Laura Shine strikes one towards goal, though it was probably a miscued cross, and Williams gets across to make the comfortable save
Game has slowed in the last while, neither team seem to be willing or able to take this game to their opponent at the minute
Good strike by Mangan just outside the box but she can't keep it down enough and it goes over the bar
Some panic in the Cork box but eventually McCarthy comes to claim and clean up the mess
Again some nice play by Cork, they have looked better than their position in the league table suggests this evening
And we are back on here, lets see if the heat starts to take its toll on either side in this second period
Half time at Turner's cross Wexford lead Cork City 1-0 thanks to an own goal on 37 minutes. Cork have played some nice football but have failed to create much and do look fragile at the back. Wexford have had a number of efforts saved or fly just wide and the own goal will be a big help as they obviously didn't bring their shooting boots today. Cork have a huge 45 ahead to try turn this game and their season around
Clipped effort from an onrushing Brophy sails just over from the edge of the box
That goal will really shake up the team talks at half time a disastrous slice of misfortune for Cork when they are already up against it
Dangerous cross by Lawrence right across the face and it is put into her own net by Mendez to give Wexford the lead
Very optimistic effort from Mangan from nearly 40 yards which bounces into Williams arms
The final ball has let both teams down so far with a number of promising positions spurned half an hour in
Strike by Corbet from the edge on the area with only McCarthy to beat is unfortunately for the Wexford striker, you close to the keeper and easily saved
Yellow for Dwyer for stopping a Cork counter with a cynical foul
Injury for Lawrence interrupts an entertaining open 20 minutes of football but as yet no decisive moment
Shot by Walsh for Wexford is pushed wide well by McCarthy and it goes for s corner with Wexford showing a good deal of threat
Bradley's shot from an angle held by Williams in the Wexford goal, the immediate counter leads to a shot by Lawrence that flies just over
Some bright sunshine over the pitch now, the heat will surely play a factor heading later into the game
Settled first few minutes for both sides, comfortable and probing gently is probably the best way to describe the opening for either team
And we are off!
The players file out now into the warm summers day and hopefully prepared to serve up an entertaining affair
Wexford have their top scorer Rianna Jarrett back on the bench, who has been absent in their last two fixtures in which they have obviously struggled without her link up play and leadership in a loss to Bohemians and scraping a draw against Treaty last time out
Wexford have struggled to pick up any momentum so far this season and could themselves do with a resounding win to get the tides turning in their campaign to a title charge, which is looking less and less likely each week
We are only a couple of minutes away from kick off in Turner's Cross where Cork City will hope to finally get their first win of the season on the board against a side they haven't managed to beat since 2017
