Match Report
Malone Gives Waves Points On The Road
DLR Waves dug out a hard-fought win at Turner’s Cross tonight, Katie Malone’s strike and Eve Badana’s brilliant saves enough to beat a lively Cork City.
Bottom side Cork, confidence up after the midweek draw with Wexford Youths, began brightly, Fiana Bradley causing a DLR Waves early defensive scramble away.
Visiting captain Jessica Gleeson planted a header just wide from Oleta Griffin’s corner delivery as DLR gained a foothold.
Yet there was little reprieve, Ellie O’Brien was dominating the midfield and eighteen minutes freed Shaunagh McCarthy, hero of Wednesday night, whose cross to Christina Dring required another away defensive intervention.
As a half ebbed very entertainingly, Griffin hit the crossbar to the relief of home goalkeeper, Abby McCarthy.
Bradley had another half-chance, released again by O’Brien but Cork finished strongly, Eva Mangan fired high from inside the box before Aoibhinn Donnelly applied the accelerator to win a corner.
From which, DLR netminder Eve Badana struggled to claim a high cross and Cork got the ball in the net only for referee David Connolly to rule it out.
After half time, DLR Waves punished the first-half profligacy of Cork, Katie Malone finishing off Griffin’s slick set piece with aplomb, putting them ahead in the fiftieth minute.
In a gutsy performance desperately crying out for a clinical edge, Cork’s goal struggles were encapsulated by Bradley winning a penalty, her hard endeavours and agility having proved a thorn in the DLR defence all game.
But Badana brilliantly saved, the Canadian shot stopper on fine form to preserve her clean sheet as the Rebel County crowd were further demoralised.
They almost had a dramatic leveller to cheer but in a cruel reflection of Cork’s finishing all game, Jesse Mendez’s header hit the cross bar in added time, to home despair!
The visitors, without a win in five before today, hung on well, led by Gleeson at the back, for a huge three points, not pretty but they won’t care one jot.
Cork, meanwhile, have plenty of positives going into the midweek break but after fine performances like that, they need goals to earn more, deserved points.
