Match Report

Athlone Cruise To Win Over Rebels In Lissywollen

Athlone Town picked up their third win of the WPD season with a 2-0 win over Cork City in Lissywollen tonight.

Chloe Singleton put the hosts ahead with a fine strike in the 4th minute and Dana Scheriff wrapped up the three points in the 80th minute, continuing her fine form since returning from injury.

Athlone started well and it paid off as early as the fourth minute. Roisin Molloy floated in a cross from the right that the Cork defence allowed to bounce in the box. Madison Gibson got her head to it and knocked it down for Singleton, who latched on and found the net with a brilliant first-time strike.

The Town were definitely on the front-foot for most of the first half and had a couple of other really good chances to go ahead. Gillian Keenan could’ve doubled their lead after Gibson won the ball on the right and switched it to her only to have Hannah Walsh deny her at point blank range.

Walsh was called into action again about three minutes later when a really nice Athlone passing move resulted in Kellie Brennan juking a defender and getting a one-on-one strike off but yet again, Walsh was quick off her line to deny her. Cork could’ve been in more trouble at the half if not for her.

Athlone started the second half well but there wasn’t a pile of major chances. Singleton came close with a strike from afar and Gibson found herself on the end of a couple of decent moves, but neither could add to the scoreline.

Kate Slevin was very unlucky not to find her name on the scoresheet in the 76th minute. Singleton intercepted a Cork move in midfield and burst forward, eventually moving it across to Gibson. Gibson held up play and moved it further out left to Slevin, who cut onto her right and let fly, only to hit the inside of the post.

Dana Scheriff wrapped it up in the 80th minute and Slevin played a huge part. She intercepted a Walsh goal kick and set Scheriff through on goal and Athlone’s #8 made no mistake. She now has four goals in three since returning from injury, a huge boost for Tommy Hewitt and his side.

Athlone saw it out from here. They head to the northwest next to take on Sligo Rovers, whilst Cork host Bohs.

  • 93'

    Full time.

  • 90'

    Three minutes added.

  • 80'

Goal! Athlone look to have sealed it as Slevin intercepts a Cork ball out, sets Scheriff through who finds the back of the net. In great form since her return.

  • 79'

Molloy drives to the byline and crosses it to Scheriff at the near post, who heads just wide.

  • 76'

Chance! Singleton bursts forward from midfield, plays it to Scheriff who moves it onto Slevin. Slevin cuts onto her right and hits the inside of the post from range. Very unlucky.

  • 71'

Singleton meets a Scheriff corner and it's just over. Athlone close once again.

  • 67'

Athlone counter press after being dispossessed and Gibson works an effort in the box onto her right, only to send it just wide.

  • 66'

Best chance for Cork all evening as a Mangan free is ficked on by Shine, who just can't get it on target.

  • 61'

Bit of urgency to Cork's play now. Could be something in this for them yet.

  • 59'

Devaney finds Gibson with a switch, but she can't kill the ball and her effort is well over.

  • 57'

Best chance of the half by far for either side. Singleton receives the ball out left, turns and trues an ambitious one and her effort is just over. Quiet half aside from that.

  • 46'

    Back underway.

  • 45'

    Half time.

  • 37'

Really nice move from Athlone sees Breenan juke a defender only to get denied at point blank range by Walsh, much like Keenan. Athlone starting to heat back up near the end of the half.

  • 34'

Big chance for Athlone. Gibson wins possession on the right and switches it to Keenan, who is denied at point blank range by Walsh. Corner Athlone.

  • 27'

Mackin plays a sloppy pass that Molloy intercepts and crosses. Lauren Walsh puts it behind. Corner Athlone.

  • 22'

Gibson floats in a cross for Brennan, whose header is right at Walsh. First Athlone effort in a while.

  • 11'

Cork are camped in their own half. Athlone are constantly on the front-foot.

  • 4'

.Goal! Early lead for Athlone. Molloy floats a cross in from the right, Gibson heads it down and Singleton lashes onto it and finds the net with a superb finish!

  • 3'

Molloy has a half effort at the back post float wide. Decent start from Athlone.

  • 2'

Gibson presses Walsh and almost wins possession. Far too passive from the City keeper.

  • 1'

    And we're off.

  • Teams are out, kickoff is nigh.

  • It's really pouring down now.

  • It's wet and cold down here in Lissywollen. Not ideal for a game of ball.

  • Athlone are looking to build off a good win over Wexford Youths last week whilst Cork are looking for a first win of the season.

  • The lineups are in.
