Hoops March To Third With Win In Dublin Derby
Shamrock Rovers ran out deserved 2-0 winners against St. Patrick’s Athletic to move above their counterparts into third.
Goals either side of the half from Johnny Kenny and a wonder Trevor Clarke strike ensured the three points in a commanding away performance by the champions.
Pat’s got off to a good start and should have done better in the opening stages when Gary O’Neill was caught on the ball, allowing Jason McClelland to slip in Chris Forrester, but the midfielder chose to cut in on his left and his effort was blocked by Rovers skipper Roberto Lopes.
The visitors then grew into the game with Jack Byrne and Neil Farrugia at the heart of everything. Graham Burke and O’Neill tested Saint’s shot stopper Dean Lyness with efforts, but they got their reward when a ball over the top was pounced upon by on-loan Celtic man Johnny Kenny and he made no mistake as he fired the ball into the near corner to send the away end into raptures.
It could have been two when Dan Cleary headed a Byrne corner just past the far post. Pat’s best chance of the first half came from Forrester who himself, glanced a header from a corner just past the far post.
The Saints improved in the second half and created some half chances through Jamie Lennon and Jake Mulraney. Just as they seemed to be knocking on the door, Clarke drove at the Pat’s back four before unleashing a venomous effort that flew into the top corner.
Rovers saw the rest of the second half out comfortably and now move onto Sligo at home next Friday. St. Pat’s are on the road next Friday as they travel up north to play Derry.
The attendance this evening was 5,011.

Jake Mulraney wins a free for Pat's, who takes himself and looks for Lennon at the back post but it is a fraction overhit and goes behind for a goal kick. O'Neill has an effort on the half volley for the visitors that goes over. The midfielder then does well to head a dangerous cross away in his own area.
Early chance for the hosts as Gary O'Neill is caught on the ball, McClelland collects and slips in Forrester who checks onto his left, but his strike is blocked by Rovers captain Roberto Lopes. Rovers go down the right through Neil Farrugia who wins a corner. Byrne takes but, Pat's clear.
The hosts get us underway.
