Match Report

Pats pick up the pace as Cork struggles continue

St. Patrick’s Athletic steadied the ship with a relatively comfortable 4-0 win over Cork City this evening in Richmond Park with goals from Jake Mulraney, Jason McClelland, Jamie Lennon and Mark Doyle.

Promoted Cork have been struggling in recent weeks and despite having some flashes of quality never looked like really challenging for the win on their travels this evening as Pat’s built on their victory last week.

Cork had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring in the second minute when a Ruairi Keating cross found Daniel Krezis at the back post. His effort was thwarted by Pat’s keeper Dean Lyness who spread himself to smother the ball.

The first real opportunity for the home side came from full back Sam Curtis’ inch perfect no look pass through to Jamie Lennon but the pressure applied from Corcoran forced his effort just wide of the near post.

Pat’s opened the scoring through the impressive Jake Mulraney. The former Orlando player got on the end of an excellent low cross from Eoin Doyle to find the bottom corner of the Cork City goal in a crowded penalty area.

Cork really struggled to really build a chance of note, reduced to long range efforts which never really looked like bothering Lyness.

Pat’s really took control of the game in the second half with an effort from Jason McClelland from distance on 63 minutes. The Cork City defence just gave the midfielder a little too much time on the ball in their half before he unleashed a belter which beat Corcoran with the help of a slight deflection off a Cork player.

Any hopes of a Cork comeback were dead ten minutes later when Jamie Lennon got on the end of an excellent maruading run and cross from Mulraney which appeared to ricochet off the Cork defender and looped over Corcoran into the back of the net.

The final nail in the coffin was applied with a fine solo effort from Mark Doyle who latched on a loose ball in the Cork half, took on Joshua Honohan and cooly finished to make it four and put the home supporters into raptures.

  • 83'

Joe Redmond meets a corner but Corcoran is equal to his powerful effort in Cork City's goal.

  • 75'

Jamie Lennon finally get the goal his efforts have deserved and it\'s a strange one. He got on the end of a cross from Mulraney on the counter at the far post. Doesn\'t get the best of connections as it appears to have come off both himself and the Cork defender to loop over Corcoran in the Cork net. Might need to watch that one again to see what actually happened.

  • 73'

Cork are really struggling to build any momentum here. Tommy Lonergan has replaced Eoin Doyle. Can he find his first Pat's goal this evening.

  • 63'

Jason McClelland has doubled the Pat's lead with an excellent effort from distance. A deflection takes the ball past Corcoran.

  • 57'

Cian Murphy comes into the action to replace Krezic who was lively in the first half.

  • 55'

Aaron Bolger tests Lyness from long range. Cork are getting chances but they're all from long range. Will need to work the ball closer to goal to have a chance of a result tonight.

  • 51'

Lyness gathers another corner under pressure. He's making this look easy.

  • 49'

A bright opening to the second half for both teams with both keepers being called into action but nothing overly worrying.

  • 45'

And we're back underway in Richmond Park.

  • 45'

HALF TIME: St. Patrick's Athletic 1-0 Cork City

  • 45'

Another fine ball from Sam Curtis towards Jake Mulraney but the goal scorer just can't get on the end of it as he collides with Corcoran who's been impressive so far despite conceding the goal.

  • 37'

Ruairi Keating almost gets Cork level as he latches on to a long ball. Lyness advanced and Keating lobs the ball from 25 yards. The underside of the cross bar comes to the home side's rescue as the ball bounces down off the post.

  • 32'

Corcoran in all sorts of trouble at the set piece as Jamie Lennon almost connects at the back post. Cork eventually clear after a scramble in their box.

  • 32'

Great work from Mulraney to dispossess Bolger and drives down the left wing. Finally gets his cross blocked out for a corner.

  • 26'

Aaron Bolger dumps Jake Mulraney to the ground with a thumbing tackle. Game delayed as we're having a quick shin guard fix here.

  • 20'

Jay McClelland has a great effort from 25 yards, Corcoran gets down to his left quickly to push it back and Eoin Doyle just misses the rebound to convert. Cork can breathe another sigh of relief here as Pat's are growing more and more into this game.

  • 18'

Lyness is at it again. A whipped corner from Cork is picked out of the air by the Pat's keeper, showing his quality in the opening stages of this game.

  • 15'

Pat's are ahead, a quick counter attack across the entire pitch resulted in a bit of pinball. Eoin Doyle finally cuts the ball across the box and Jake Mulraney slots the ball into the bottom corner from around the penalty box.

  • 13'

Crunching tackle from Krezic in midfield give Pat's a free kick. He's letting Pat's know he's come to play.

  • 12'

Pat's almost make the breakthrough with a lovely ball from Curtis puts Jamie Lennon in but his effort just goes inches wide of the keepers near post.

  • 5'

A clash of heads has caused a pause to the action here as a player from each side get attention in the Cork box after a collision at a corner.

  • 2'

What a save from Lyness to get the game up and running here. Big chance for Cork as a ball to the corner was headed towards goal at the back post by Krezic, but the goalkeeper keeps the effort out with his feet before smothering it at the second attempt.
