Curtis Heads Pats To Dublin Derby Glory
St. Patrick’s Athletic bounced back from defeat on Monday to beat Shelbourne 1-0 thanks to a Sam Curtis header.
The fullback’s second half winner was the decisive moment in a tight Dublin derby that produced little clear cut chances.
The first half was a case of both teams cancelling each other out. Although the game got off to a quick start, chances were few and far between. Chris Forrester had an ambitious effort from distance in the opening minute that went just over the far post.
Shels responded with two free kicks in quick succession, but they didn’t trouble Pat’s shot stopper Dean Lyness.
Midfielder Ben McCormack almost gave the visitors the lead with a wonder strike from 30-yards that struck the top of the crossbar.
Shels found themselves in dangerous positions with Caffrey and Moylan, but struggled to create chances from them.
JJ Lunney had an effort from just outside the box that went just wide.
The visitors started the better and should have took the lead when Forrester had an effort parried right to the feet of Eoin Doyle who couldn’t fire home.
They did get their rewards however from the resulting set piece that was prodded home at the far post right in front of the travelling Saints faithful.
The hosts created some half chances through substitutes McManus and Robinson but failed to trouble Lyness.
The Saints held on for a big three points that sends them above their opponents, although Shelbourne do have a game in hand still.
Shelbourne need to dust themselves down as they head to Bohemians next Friday night, whilst St. Pat’s host Dundalk the same night.
