Shels Come From Behind To Overcome Drogs
Shelbourne came from behind to defeat Drogheda United for the first time this season and move back into the top half of the table.
Freddie Draper had given Drogs the lead just before the break but whatever Shels manager Damien Duff said at half-time had the desired effect.
Within minutes of the restart substitute Sean Boyd drew Shels level. Shane Griffin added a second while another sub Evan Caffrey grabbed their third in the 77th minute.
Draper netted his second goal in added time, but it was too late and this result sees Drogs remain in the relegation play-off spot, as Cork picked up three points earlier today.
Drogs manager Kevin Doherty decided to start Andrew Wogan in goals, with Colin McCabe dropping to the bench.
Shels dominated the opening proceedings but the Drogheda defence held firm. For all the possession they had, the home side didn’t make Drogs keeper Wogan work.
In the fourth minute JJ Lunney put a ball into the box but it was diverted out by Conor Keeley for a corner. Jack Moylan played the ball into Matty Smith in the 17th minute but Drogs put it out again for a corner.
Smith hit a fine strike in the 23rd minute but like before put out for a corner as Shels continued to press. Drogs were content to sit back and defend as Shels couldn’t put away any of their chances.
Against the run of play Drogs took the lead in the 39th; Aaron McNally put an excellent ball into the box and Draper made no mistake heading past Conor Kearns.
Shels manager Damien Duff rang the changes at half-time with Sean Boyd being introduced. It only took a few minutes for him to make an impact. Moylan played the ball out to Shane Farrell, he floated a ball into the box and Boyd’s header beat Wogan.
The home side doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Farrell’s corner was eventually finished to the net by Griffin. In the 77th minute they grabbed their third goal through Caffrey; Mark Coyle broke, he played the ball to Caffrey who fired to the net.
Right at the end Draper got his and his side’s second goal but it was too little, too late.
