Match Report
Michael Duffy produced a vintage display as Derry enjoyed a relatively comfortable victory over bottom side UCD 4-1 at the Ryan McBride Brandywell this evening to move to the top of the League of Ireland table this evening. Derry opened the scoring with a dozen minutes on the clock with a solid header at the back post from Jordan McEneff. A beautifully weighted cross from Michael Duffy laid it on a plate for his teammate despite the best efforts of Kian Moore in the UCD goal. UCD keeper Kian Moore was also in fine form as ten minutes later with an excellent save to deny Will Patching from distance. The youngster touched Patching's belter over the bar for a corner after fancy footwork from the Derry midfielder gave him the opportunity to strike. On the half hour mark a combination of Moore and the post kept UCD within one of their hosts. Michael Duffy almost found the bottom corner after a mazy run but Moore pushed it out for another corner. Duffy's corner came off Keaney's head and gave McEneff all the time in the world from an acute angle but his effort went wide off the outside of the post to leave just a single goal between the sides at the break. It was Duffy who settled matters with his first goal just two minutes after the restart. He created and finished a beautiful move combining brilliantly with Will Patching to fire past Moore to double Derry’s advantage. Duffy once again became his own provider heading a long ball into his path and lofting the ball over the onrushing Moore to kill the contest just after the hour mark. As Derry rang the changes UCD did finally come into the game and it was from a set piece that they finally found the net. A corner was contested well by Adam Wells and the ball broke to Wells who finished on the turn for the students. Substitute Mattie Ward would finish the scoring with a simple touch at the back post after a great burst on the opposite side from Ryan Graydon. His chip looked to be going wide but Ward was on hand to apply the finish.Duffy Spearheads Candystripes To Top Of The League
