Mulraney Stars as Pat Secure Comeback Win
St. Patricks Athletic began life without Tim Clancy with 3-2 win as they came from behind to defeat Cork City in Liam Buckley’s first game at the helm on Leeside.
Pats were on the attack from the off through Mark Doyle who almost put the visitors ahead after forcing a great save out of Jimmy Corcoran from close range.
The visitors did get their goal however in the 6th minute when Conor Carty struck home moments after City had a penalty claim at the other end.
Despite this Start, the hosts were will in the game and drew level on 15 minutes through Tunde Owolabi who struck home against his former club in what was a very impressive performance from the striker.
Proceedings would get even better for City four minutes later when academy prospect Joe O’Brien Whitmarsh drove a powerful header from the outside the box into the corner of the net.
Moments before Jake Mulraney hit the crossbar for Pats in an end-to-end half with chances galore. Ruairí Keating should have had a third for City but could not find the header needed to extend his side’s lead.
Pats had another chance on the stroke of half time when Kevin Custovic was lucky his deflection went over the bar after a manic goalmouth scramble.
The beginning of the second half was understandably flatter than the first. However, this all changed on 55 minutes when Jake Mulraney curled a beautiful left footed shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it 2-2.
The goal appeared to set the game on a different pace with proceedings becoming more sop start and sloppier with six yellow cards dished out in the second half alone.
Everything changed in the blink of an eye however as substitute Adam Murphy beat Jimmy Corcoran to the ball before rounding the City keeper to make it 3-2 to the Saints 10 minutes from time.
That goal proved to be decisive as Pats held on for a crucial win while City continue to struggle.
