Match Report

Flores freekick helps Bohs bounce back

Full Time in Dalymount Park where it has finished 5-0 to Bohemians against Cork City. The home side produced an excellent second half performance to win the game comfortably, after a 28th minute red card to Cork’s Ally Gilchrist proved significant for the result.

In the first half, it was the visitors who almost took the lead inside the first minute were it not for a brilliant save from Bohemians goalkeeper James Talbot. From a throw-in, Cork’s Ruairi Keating found himself with a free header from 7 yards out, but his effort was denied by a superb save from the keeper, who was called into action much earlier than he would have anticipated.

From there, however, it was the home side who took complete control of the match. They dominated the possession early on, but were met with a gritty Cork City defence who certainly made life difficult for the league leaders. Bohs attacked continuously down their left-hand side through Patrick Kirk and Kris Twaderk, who certainly had the measure of their opponents.

With 28 minutes on the clock, Cork had frustrated the home side and had managed to limit any serious chances, until Ally Gilchrist was shown a straight red card for what looked to be a stamp on the crotch of Bohemians striker Jonathan Afolabi. Afolabi and Gilchrist had been at each other all game, and arguably Gilchrist was lucky not to receive a yellow card earlier. Afolabi looked as if he was in some serious pain, but was able to play on eventually.

From the resulting free-kick, Bohs captain Jordan Flores struck the ball cleanly and watched it sail into the top right-hand corner of the Cork City net, leaving goalkeeper Daniel Moynihan no chance. Flores’ brilliant 30-yard strike was his third effort of the half, his first forcing a save from the goalkeeper just minutes earlier.

For the remainder of the half, with a one-man advantage, Bohs pushed on in search of a second goal to kill off the game, and had Cork on the ropes for the next 10 minutes. The visitors, however, showed great composure to head into the break with just a one-goal deficit, but the red card would prove to be costly.

It took the home-side just 12 minutes after the restart to add to their tally, this time through Adam McDonnell, who received a pass from Twardek on the left side edge of the box and managed to steer his strike into the bottom right corner of the Cork City net.  That was to be McDonnell’s last involvement in the game, capping off an excellent performance.

Substitute Ali Coote made an instant impact following his arrival to the game in the 70th minute, scoring two goals in as many minutes as he was on the receiving end of a brilliant Afolabi flick for an easy strike at the back post in the 78th minute. 2 minutes later, Coote doubled his tally for the night, as fellow substitute Declan McDaid teed the midfielder up inside the box, where he scored from close range.

Just 5 minutes later, James McManus made it 5-0 when his strike from 25 yards sailed into the top right corner.

Bohemians really made their man advantage count in the second half, and really pushed on late into the second half to secure a comfortable 5-0 win. Cork City flailed away from home, and were made pay for their indiscipline in the first half.
