Match Report

Omorehiomwan strikes as Bray beat Athlone

Cole Omorehiomwan is turning into something of a gem for Bray Wanderers as he once again scored the winner for the Seagulls in a fiesty 1-0 victory over Athlone.

The young centre-half popped up in the box with 15 minutes left to win a second consecutive home game for the Wanderers, who had twice hit the bar earlier.

Both sides had plenty of chances a-piece in the first half, but neither were able to make any count. Bray had the better spell of possession, but Athlone capitalised on sloppy mistakes, such as one by Lovic in the 35th minute which resulted in Pierrot being played through, but his effort was pushed away by McGuinness.

The best chance of the half did come for the home side however, with only two minutes remaining, when Dane Massey flicked on a corner, it was then met by the head of Ben Feeney, but he was only able to guide his shot onto the bar and it came crashing back out. This came just after Adam Lennon had got in behind the Seagulls backline, with his attempt saved once more by the stand-in keeper, who was more than proving his worth for Ian Ryan’s side.

Bray dominated the opening procedures of the second half and really should have gone in front fifteen minutes in. A lovely through-ball by Harry Groome found Jack Hudson who dug a cross out on the by-line. Chris Lyons got under it and his looping header came back off the crossbar twice now it was the enemy of the Wanderers.

The winner did arrive though with only fifteen minutes to go. Substitute Jake Walker did well down the left-hand side and put a low cross in. Once more, Omorehiomwan was there and for the second game running, put his side in front with a sliding finish at the back post to give “The Wanderers” another valuable three points.

Bray Wanderers are next in action in the Leinster Senior League Cup next, with a semi-final against Usher Celtic, followed by an away trip to Longford. As for Athlone, they will next play Cobh. looking to avenge this set back.

  • 95'

Full time here and Bray are back to winning ways and of course, Omorehiomwan is the match winner once again. Thanks for joining me this evening.

  • 90'

Four minutes added on here, Athlone throwing everything at it to salvage a point.

  • 81'

The home side make their 5th and final change, Davis on for Chris Lyons.

  • 79'

Kavanagh on for Leal for Athlone.

  • 75'

Another Athlone change as Louis comes on for Dolia.

  • 74'

Finally, there's the break through! Of course, it is that man once more, Cole Omorehiomwan, who else! He finds himself at the back post to tap in a low cross and put the Seagulls in front. 1-0.

  • 71'

Fourth change for the home side, Massey is taken off and Lorcan Fitzgerald replaces him.

  • 70'

Another big chance for Bray isn't taken up. A whipped cross in back post by Donohue finds a lurching Feeney but Minogue makes himself big and produces a great save.

  • 67'

First substitute for Athlone, Ryan replaces Lennon.

  • 63'

Double change for Bray, Thompson and Walker on in place of Shortt and Hudson.

  • 59'

Bray hit the bar again! A lovely through-ball by Groome finds Hudson who scoops a ball in from the by-line. Chris Lyons is there to meet it but his looping header comes down on the crossbar and out.

  • 52'

First yellow for the away side goes to Aaron Connolly, hasn't been his first foul either so it was coming.

  • 45'

Sub for Bray at half time, Luka Lovic off for Zach Donohue.

  • 46'

Half time and a flurry of chance towards the end there for both sides. Eventful but still 0-0 at the break.

  • 43'

Bray hit the crossbar! A corner is whipped in, Massey heads towards goal and Feeney meets it with his own, which cannons off the bar. Somehow still level here, just as Lennon had had a shot of his own saved by McGuinness.

  • 41'

Bray's first big chance of note now. A lovely one-two between Almirall and Lyons gets Feeney in but Minogue is down low to save, Van Geenan is booked for a foul in the build-up.

  • 35'

First big chance of the game goes the way of the away side. A loose ball by Lovic gives it straight to the opposition and Pierrot is through. His shot is straight at McGuinness though who bats it away.

  • 30'

Athlone looking probably the fitter side, outmuscling Bray at times. An over the top ball is met on the half volley by Lennon just there but it's well over.

  • 22'

First yellow of the game goes to Bray, Lovic booked for a late challenge.

  • 21'

Bray switching wingers constantly, Shortt and Feeney getting at both of Athlone's fullbacks.

  • 12'

First real chance comes for the home side, with a corner swung in and met by Omorehiomwan, but his header bounces up into Minogue's hands.

  • 7'

Slow enough start here with both sides feeling their way into the game.

  • We're underway at the Carlisle.

  • Interesting snippet here on the team sheet. Head Coach of Athlone is down as Dario Castelo, not Dermot Lennon. Make of that what you will...

  • Four changes for Bray this evening, McGuinness in goal in place of the suspended Moody, as well as the return of captain Dane Massey and the other additions of Harry Groome and Guillermo Almirall. One change for Athlone with Matthew Leal replacing Jamar Campion-Hinds.

  • Hello and welcome to a very sunny Carlisle Grounds where third-placed Bray Wanderers host Athlone Town. Team news to follow.
