Athlone down ten-man Longford
Athlone snapped their losing streak with a 1-0 win over Midlands rivals Longford in Lissywollen tonight.
In a match where chances were few and far between, Athlone’s main man Franz Pierrot ultimately decided the derby in the 16th minute, with neither side kicking on from this point on.
Athlone started on the front foot and had the lion's share of chances in the first half. They were rewarded in the 16th minute when Jamar Campion Hinds burst down the right wing and his cross to Franz Pierrot was simply watched by the Longford defence. The Haitian international popped up at the back stick for a tap-in, much to the sheer delight of the home fans.
The chances during the first half dried up afterward. Both players showed a willingness to get stuck in and there was a good tempo, but not much created in terms of chances. Athlone pushed toward the end of the half but to no avail.
The second half followed in similar fashion, with the talking point being the four red cards that were handed out. The first of these came in the 64th minute when Aodh Dervin dragged Patrick Hickey in the middle of the park. Dervin ended up on the floor and handled the ball when he went down, earning a second yellow and then a red.
Athlone then went down to ten men in the 90th minute. A corner came from the right and a Longford attacker appeared to have collided with Velikin as he went to claim it. A bit of afters followed this which ended up with Velikin shoving the opposition player into the net. The red was an easy decision for referee Marc Lynch.
Longford then went down to nine men five minutes later. Campion Hinds was shielding the ball in the corner and Kyle O’Connor lashed out and took him down, earning a straight red. Simply a case of frustration at the end of a bitter affair.
Stephen Henderson then followed his two players down the tunnel two minutes later when he was given a red for his protestation at the officials. The Longford manager continued to have a go at Lynch after he was handed the card before being serenaded down the tunnel by the home fans.
Longford lost ground on the playoff spots with this loss. Athlone maintain their spot and extended the gap thanks to Treaty’s loss in Waterford.

Dervin drives forward and hits a good curled effort, but it's right at Velikin.
Fay is played through but Abdikadir comes from nowhere and clears. Great defending.

Half time.
Athlone have a corner. Bit more pressure from them in the last few minutes as they look for a goal.
Two minutes added on.
Five minutes from half time. Action has died down. Both sets of players are willing to get stuck in and there's a tempo, but not too much clear chances.
Velikin is down following a collision with Girugi. Looks like he'll carry on.
Ibrahim gets a shot off for Longford but it's tame. First Longford shot of the night.
Connolly gets through following a one-two with Pierrot but his effort is with his weak foot and right at Brady.
Goal! Campion Hinds gets down the right wing, puts a ball in that Longford don't deal with and Pierrot taps it in! 1-0 Athlone and it's been coming!
Pierrot gets through following some suspect defending from Longford but is falling as he gets his shot off. Athlone were looking for a foul.
Pierrot catches Cian Byrne whilst going up for a challenge and Byrne looks to have hurt his back badly. Pierrot might be lucky to have escaped without a card.
Ibrahim blocks a Duffy shot at the near post and it's a corner to Athlone.
Campion Hinds forces a good save off Brady at the near post following a dazzling run. Corner Athlone.

Longford can potentially leapfrog Athlone into playoff spots with a win and results elsewhere going their way. The gap between these two has shrunk in recent weeks.
