Athlone Move To Third To Keep Promotion Race Alive
Athlone Town moved up to third place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Bray Wanderers in Lissywollen tonight.
Aaron Connolly gave the hosts the lead right before half time, whilst Adam Lennon and Jamar Campions Hinds added a second and third respectively to seal the points in the second, Chris Lyons netted a consolation for Bray in added time.
The first half was mainly uneventful but Athlone were on top. Matthew Leal and Franz Pierrot both had good chances they should’ve tucked away. It took up until the 43rd minute for the breakthrough to come.
Pierrot won a free out left and Aaron Connolly stepped up to take it. His initial shot was blocked but the second ball was worked back out to him. He worked it onto his left foot and astonishingly, his cross just went right in. A strange goal but nonetheless, a deserved lead.
Bray came into the game a bit in the second half but it didn’t matter by the 53rd minute when Athlone Town made it 2-0. Alex Moody came off his line to deal with a through ball to Franz Pierrot but under-hit his clearance and hit it right at Adam Lennon just past the D in the Bray half.
Lennon’s first touch wasn’t perfect but he managed to kill it well enough to get enough power on his effort that lobbed Moody from way out. Again, a strange goal but a two-goal lead that was deserved nonetheless.
This was sealed in the 70th minute. Patrick Hickey went on a barnstorming run from midfield that ended up with him going by three Bray defenders. A risky decision given the through ball to Pierrot looked on but Hickey worked it to the bye-line and pulled it back for the aforementioned Pierrot.
The Haitian couldn’t quite get to it but the ball fell perfectly to Jamar Campion Hinds who put it into an empty net. This one was sealed on large part thanks to that Hickey run.
Chris Lyons got a consolation for Bray right before the full-time whistle when a cross from the left fell to him and he tapped in, with the goal not mattering much. With the win Athlone move up to third and travel to Kerry next week, whilst Bray are in fifth and travel to Waterford.

Goal! Bray get a consolation after it falls to Chris Lyons from a free in and he puts it into an empty net. Full time now.
Four minutes added on.
Goal! Patrick Hickey flies through the Bray defence with an excellent run and pulls it back for Campion Hinds who fires into an empty net! It's all over now!
Callum Thompson avoids a yellow for a rough challenge on Hickey. Ref has made a few risky calls to that regard.
Lennon works it inside and attempts to lob Moody but he's just high and wide. Would've been a lovely second.
Goal! Moody is off his line to deal with a through ball to Pierrot, only clears it as far as Lennon and from distance to lobs it in! 2-0 Athlone!
Bray have started this half well. Much improved performance already.
Back underway.
Teams are coming back out.
Half time
One minute added on.
Goal! A second ball comes back out to Connolly from the free in and his left footed cross goes right in! A bizarre goal!
Massey fouls Pierrot in a dangerous area and gets a yellow. Chance for Athlone.
Omorehiomwan storms forward and wins the ball off Rodriguez, but Minogue is off his line and collects it.
Now Omorehiomwan intentionally drags down Pierrot and escapes a booking. That's two very obvious cards Bray have avoided.
Big call from the ref. O'Sullivan fouls Campion Hinds again and avoids a second yellow. Bray should be down to ten men.
Great chance for Pierrot as it falls to him from the ball in. Angle is tight but he drags his shot wide. A rare miss for him.
Len O'Sullivan fouls Campion Hinds and gives away a free. Could be a good chance for Athlone.
Pierrot turns Omorehoimwan and his shot from distance takes a deflection wide. Good play from the #9.
First good chance of the game. Pierrot gets in behind the Bray line and pulls it back to Leal, who fluffs his lines. Best chance of the game by far at this stage, should be 1-0.
First chance of the game. Moody only clears a through ball as far as Matthew Leal, who attempts to catch him out. Shot just doesn't come down in time.
And we're off.
Teams are out of the tunnel.
Lovely day for a game of ball in Lissywollen too, as is the case across the country at the minute.
Bray took points off Galway in their last game, becoming the second side this season to do so. Athlone should also be in high spirits, coming off a derby win over Longford.
Cobh's win over Longford took them up to third momentarily. Athlone or Bray move up to that spot with a win tonight, with Bray having held it before today's matches.
