Match Report
Wexford into first Cup quarter final in five years
Wexford FC have progressed to the quarter final of the FAI Cup for the first time since 2016 with a 2-0 away win over 10-man Killester Donnycarney FC thanks to goals from Tyler Dunphy and Karl Manahan in Dublin.
Wexford were without talisman Jack Doherty early on after he suffered a knock and struggled to create chances.
The few that they did manage to create either missed the target or were saved by Killester goalkeeper Jack Lydon. Lydon pulled off a great save with his feet from a point blank header.
Killester carved out chances for themselves with Robert Dunne cannoning a shot off of the crossbar. Mark Ryan also came very close with a speculative volley that would have been a goal of the season contender had it found the back of the net.
Sam Burgess caused all sorts of problems for Ian Ryan’s defence with his pace and mazey dribbles.
Jack Moylan was left with creating the majority of Wexford’s chances in the first-half, but struggled to get going.
After the restart, the visitors began to dominate more of the ball. The second-half opened with a barrage of Wexford crosses into the Killester box, but none of them found a desired target.
The breakthrough came just 10 minutes into the second-half. Evan Farrell managed to get free inside the box and squared the ball across for Tyler Dunphy to tap home his first senior goal for Wexford.
Proceedings would go from bad to worse for the hosts when Ryan Robinson lunged into Evan Farrell with a late tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him red.
Just a minute later Karl Manahan put the final nail in the coffin. A deft finish from the edge of the box placed into the bottom corner to double Wexford’s lead.
This afternoon’s win means that Ian Ryan’s men are now three games unbeaten, their best run of form this season. Their cup run is a bright spark in what has been a poor season.
