Usher fall ‘Fowl of Eoin’s Killester-Donnycarney Cup strike

An Eoin Fowler strike eight minutes from time, was enough to see Killester Donnycarney FC through to the last 16 of the FAI Cup.

It was a dominant second half display from the home side that ultimately knocked Usher Celtic out of the Cup at Hadden Park.

An entertaining first half was produced, with both sides clearly up for the game. The away outfit had the better of the chances with the best opportunity of the half falling to Usher Celtic’s Calvin Douglas. Winger Graham Curran’s corner kick bounced kindly towards Douglas who hit his shot on the half volley which narrowly went over Lyndon and the Killester crossbar.

Usher Celtic had a penalty claim turned down much to the disbelief of the away side and fans. Gareth Kilkenny was played through by Curran and was strongly challenged by Reece McEnteer. The referee waved play on with Killester narrowly getting away with it. The sides went in level at the interval.

The visitors started the second half strongly and midfielder Calvin Douglas almost opened the scoring a couple of minutes after the restart when he cut in from the left hand side and curled a right footed shot just over the Killester Donnycarney goal. The ever lively Jordan Buckley then picked the ball up just inside the Killester half and beat two men before going one on one with Jack Lyndon who pulled off an excellent save with his feet to keep the scores level.

Cian McMullan then had a huge chance for the hosts as he was played through on goal but his effort was saved by Karl Lynam. Lynam’s save fell straight to the feet of substitute Sam Burgess whose effort was cleared off the line in heroic fashion by Robert Martin.

Usher Celtic had a huge chance of their own almost immediately after. Left back Craig Giles found himself on the edge of the Killester six-yard box but his effort somehow went over the bar.

Just when it was looking like the game was destined for extra time, Fowler picked up the ball after McMullan’s attempt was blocked and fired his shot past Lynam into the bottom corner sending the home crowd berserk.

Fowler’s excellent finish means Killester Donnycarney FC are now into the last 16 of the FAI Cup.
