Match Report

Green Shoots Emerge in Danish Defeat

An early Nicoline Sorensen strike was the only difference between Ireland and Denmark in a very competitive encounter at Tallaght Stadium in which Denmark displayed why they are seventeen places higher in the current rankings.

Despite the rankings Vera Pauw will be happy with the application shown by her players and the response to going behind so early on to the Danes, the runners up in the last European Championship in 2017.

After threatening early with good combinations from Keeva Keenan and Heather Payne looking lively for the Irish it was the Danes who hit the front in the 9th minute when Nicoline Sorenson found herself unmarked at the back post. Her powerful effort evaded Katie McCabe's attempted challenge while Grace Maloney will be disappointed not to have done better with the ball slipping almost through her body and crossing the line.

To be fair the the Reading netminder she would emerge as one of Ireland's most solid performers making a number of impressive saves from the all star forward line she faced including the most expensive women's footballer of all time Pernille Harder, a recent recruit for Chelsea with a reported €250k price tag.

Amber Barrett caused a bit of chaos at the back for Denmark when she raced onto a through ball only to be met by the outcoming Danish keeper. Christensen appeared to handle the ball outside the area but the officials waved away the protests from the Donegal forward.

Heather Payne had the best chance of the first half to equalise when she found herself in possession with the Danish goalkeeper all at sea. Her lobbed effort didn't find the Danish goal though and Christensen survived.

Maloney saved impressively from a Bruun snapshot after the Danish player worked an excellent throw in routine to force the opportunity on goal. Denmark couldn't create anything from the resulting corner.

Five minutes from the interval Ireland nearly came undone again. Niamh Fahey was caught out of position and a long ball into that space found Nadim in acres of space. Her lofted shot over the stranded Maloney should have found the net but Diane Caldwell managed to get a head on it and guide it safely to the arms of her grateful goalkeeper.

Emily Whelan would enter the fray at the interval for Heather Payne and made an immediate impact getting involved in the action and creating the best Irish opportunity of the game for herself when her deft control saw the ball land at her feet but she couldn't force a save from Christensen early in the second half.

A few minutes later Kate McCabe combined well with Whelan to create some space about twenty five yards out. Her powerful left foot effort cannoned back off the Danish crossbar with the keeper stranded. Whelan's influence was obvious throughout the entire second half as she created an urgency and a focus that had been lacking in the first half.

On 63 minutes, Louise Quinn left a routine backpass a little short and almost let Harder in but a stretching challenge from Maloney ensured the danger was cleared at the expense of a throw in for the Danes.

Diane Caldwell would make another stellar intervention as she reacted first to a save from Maloney which fell into the path of the onrushing Harder. Her outstretched leg ensuring the Chelsea forward didn't convert her opportunity.

Ireland finished strongly with the positional switch of Louise Quinn to an attacking role causing havoc in the Danish box. Some well worked opportunities fell to Irish players but they just couldn't find an equaliser. Emily Whelan in injury time with arguably the best opportunity and she did make the net bulge but it was the outside of the side netting that felt the impact of her effort from the edge of the box.

Speaking to RTE after the final whistle, the Irish manager Vera Pauw said:

"I am very proud of the team, they really made a step up controlling the game, we created three or four chances. It's a shame we together for such a short time. We've only had 11 training sessions since I started.

"I think there is a good future, and I'm very happy that we have chosen this dynamic team for this evening's game as it's create to test ourselves against good sides..

"We organised our midfield to deal with their dynamic players. At half time we used a few video clips of the first half to show and we sorted that."

On McCabe's effort mid way through the second half. "What a shot. That's what Katie is capable of. Hopefully we can get her further forward in our next few games."

"I'm very proud and happy."

  • 94'

The referee's whistle sounds as a flurry of Irish bodies try to get a strike off in the Danish penalty area. A fine performance from the Irish side and plenty for Vera Pauw to be happy with ahead of the clash with Belgium on Sunday.

  • 92'

Emily Whelan had an opportunity to snatch a very late draw as Louise Quinn causes havoc up front against the Danish defence but her effort finds the side netting at the south stand end of Tallaght Stadium.

  • 88'

Arguably the best move of the game finds Pernilla Harder in acres of space about twelve yards out from the Irish goal but her snapshot goes well wide of Maloney's right hand post.

  • 88'

Pernilla Harder's effort is dealt with by the five woman defensive wall.

  • 87'

Some desperate defending from Ireland as Ellen Molloy gives away a free on the edge of the box for a tackle from behind on Harder. The Danish forward lines up for a shot.

  • 81'

Ireland have been living on the edge for the last few minutes. A number of Danish efforts have peppered Maloney's goal but with less than 10 minutes on the clock it's still just the one early goal that separates the sides. Can Ireland grab a goal to cap off a very solid performance from the Girls in Green.

  • 75'

A lunge from Diane Caldwell keeps the Danes out after Maloney parries a Danish shot to the feet of the onrushing Harder. The experienced defender stepped in once again to keep the Chelsea star scoreless.

  • 72'

Aine O'Gorman replaces Keenan for Ireland and her first act is to take a series of throw in's down the Danish left hand side. Not quite the range of Keenan but creates a header for Jarrett who can't get the ball on target.

  • 68'

Maloney saves Ireland as she pulls off a phenomenal one on one effort from Bruun to keep the deficit at the minimum. Denmark fail to capitalise on the resulting corner.

  • 67'

Her whipped effort just goes wide of the far post with the Danish keeper no where near the effort.

  • 67'

Fantastic steal from O'Sullivan as she finds Jarrett and Emily Whelan continues her impressive form winning a free kick on the edge of the box. Katie McCabe's left foot stands over this.

  • 63'

Louise Quinn almost left Grace Maloney with too much to do on a short kick out but the WSL stopper gets there just ahead of the Danish forward to clear the danger at the expense of a throw.

  • 63'

Keeva Keenan's throw in's have been an integral part of the Irish game plan reaching the edge of the 6 yard box.

  • 60'

Megan Connolly is receiving treatment after a couple of robust challenges and will be replaced by Ellen Molloy as Rianna Jarrett also makes her introduction for Amber Barrett

  • 59'

Too much power from McCabe sees her pass evade both sets of players and go out for a goalkick for the Danes.

  • 58'

Keenan is fouled on the sideline which gives Ireland a rare attacking set piece to create an opportunity for McCabe to swing in a cross.

  • 53'

Great build up play from Whelan see McCabe take responsibility from long range and her left foot belter smacks back off the Danish crossbar as Christensen is beaten. Whelan has added a serious threat to the Irish attack.

  • 49'

Whelan makes an immediate impact battling her way to create an opportunity for herself but she can't keep her effort on the Danish goal.

  • 45'

One change for Ireland as Emily Whelan replaces Heather Payne at the interval as we get back underway in Tallaght.

  • 45'

Denmark have dominated proceedings but an impressive Irish defensive performance has left them just one behind at the interval with some good goalkeeping and a headed clearance from Diane Caldwell to thank for that.

  • 45'

1 additional minute to be played.

  • 40'

Ireland saved as Nadim finds an acre of space behind the Irish defence and lofts her effort over the stranded Maloney. Caldwell's header to her grateful keeper's arms sees the defender fouled for a free out to Ireland.

  • 35'

Ireland are experiencing their best spell in terms of both possession and territory as they are beginning to find their feet in possession against their higher ranked opponents. Have created some issues for the Danes at the back.

  • 32'

A well worked throw in from the Danes see Grace Maloney forced into a good save from Bruen who's powerful effort is deflected over the bar by the Reading keeper.

  • 30'

Amber Barrett reacts quickly to a mistake by a Danish defender but can't find the support. The referee dismisses her valid claims for a foul from Boye on the edge of the Danish box.

  • 27'

Great attacking move through the middle for Ireland but Jamie Finn can't find the final ball to release Denise O'Sullivan.

  • 25'

Ireland are acquitting themselves well considering the respective rankings of the two sides. Denmark currently sit at 14th on the FIFA rankings while Ireland are down in 31st place. The possession stats in this game, which Denmark currently dominate probably back up those ranking positions.

  • 19'

A long ball from Keenan released Heather Payne who can't capitalise on a mistake from the Danish keeper who was caught in no man's land. She just can't get her lobbed effort on target in windy conditions.

  • 15'

Ireland have a shout for a free kick in a dangerous area when the Danish keeper is adjudged not to have been outside the box at the feet of Amber Barrett as the Donegal native races onto a through ball for Ireland's best opportunity so far.

  • 13'

Harder's through ball creates an opportunity for Nadia Nadim to create a bit of space for her in the box but Maloney is equal to her effort. The Dane's ability to cut open the Irish defence will be a concern for the Irish coaching staff.

  • 9'

After a let off 90 seconds earlier. Sorenson finds herself with a little bit of time to pick her spot and her powerful effort evades the lunge of Katie McCabe and finds it's way through Maloney's arms and legs to open the scoring for the away side.

  • 7'

Half chance for Denmark when a loose pass is latched onto by Harder who creates a change for Everton's Sorenson but she can't get her effort on target.

  • 4'

It's been a bright opening for the Irish with the wind ensuring most of the action has been along the Irish right hand side. Keenan and Payne have combined well along that flank so far. No real opportunity for either side yet, but great pressure from the girls in green.

  • Amber Barrett gets us underway as Ireland will have to cope with the threat of the world's most expensive player Pernille Harder of Chelsea this evening.

  • Ireland Team: Moloney, Keenan, Fahey, Quinn, Caldwell, McCabe, Finn, Connolly, O'Sullivan, Payne, Barrett.

  • And the anthems are playing in Tallaght Stadium as both sides line up for Vera Pauw's first friendly fixtures against a strong Danish side.
