Match Report

Galway deliver win over Cork

Galway had a routine 6-1 win over Cork today in their WNL encounter at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The visitors took the lead through an Eva Mangan wonder-goal, but goals from Chloe Singleton, Kate Slevin, a brace from Emma Starr and another from substitute Aoife Thompson meant Galway more than responded in fine fashion.

Substitute Elle Rose O'Flaherty rounded off the game for the hosts with a late goal.

It was a truly spectacular goal that got this goal fest underway. 11 minutes in Mangan picked up the ball about 40-yards out on the right hand side after Galway lost it. She looked up and lobbed Hannah Walsh, finding the top corner. It proved to be nothing more than a poking of the bear, however.

Ten minutes later and Galway responded. Good play down the left saw the ball crossed to the back post, where Chloe Singleton came storming in. With a first time effort, she beat Abby McCarthy at her near post. Galway didn’t let up until half time.

Another ten minutes passed and Singleton turned provider. She collected the ball on the right and floated a brilliant cross into the area. Kate Slevin popped up and put her head on it, giving Galway the lead.

Just over five minutes after this and the game was all but ended. Singelton yet again contributed, firing in a cross to Emma Starr. Starr’s initial attempt was denied, but her rebounded effort found the roof of the net. It stayed 3-1 until the break.

Little chances came until ten minutes before time, where Galway again went on a hot streak not too dissimilar to the one that came in the first half. First it was substitute Aoife Thompson’s turn. Some impressive play down the left found its way to Thompson. She held the ball up in the box, turning onto her right and finding the bottom corner. This started a period that rubbed serious salt into the visitors wound.

Emma Starr earned a brace five minutes later. The ball was fed into her into the area and she simply took it first time. It capped off a performance very worthy of the player of the match reward.

O’Flaherty put the icing on this cake right before the full time whistle. She found herself just on the right hand side of the box and slammed her effort into the top left corner, making it six for Galway. A great afternoon for the home side, who have sent their visitors on a long journey home with much to reflect on.
