Shamrock Rovers avoid cupset with a convincing win over Bangor Celtic
Shamrock Rovers advanced to the next round of the FAI Cup, following a convincing win over Bangor Celtic this evening.
The Non-League team from Crumlin put in a great performance but fell to a 4-0 defeat under the floodlights in Tallaght.
Strange to see Rovers in an away strip in Tallaght, but the “visitors” showcased their quality to rubber stamp a spot in the second round draw.
Rovers threatened early and had the ball in the net after seven minutes, Rory Gaffney converting a ball in by Sean Gannon but the linesman had the flag up for offside, Corey O’Sullivan and Neil Ferrugia both had further attempts at goal, Ferrugia’s effort the first to really test Adam Hayden in the Bangor goal.
All action and we still had not gone beyond the 20th-minute mark, Ferrugia had the ball in the net after 18 minutes, but again the flag went up, minutes later Bangor went up the other end and after a long throw-in they also had the ball in the net, handball was the decision by the referee as she spotted it in the build-up.
Ferrguia again stung the palms of Hayden, before Sean Hoare cannoned a header off the crossbar, meeting Dylan Watts cross the keeper looked beaten but the bar coming to Bangor’s aid as they remained in the tie.
The net would ripple again in the 33rd minute but this time it would stand, Watts the provider Gaffney the scorer, his near post finish just under the crossbar, enough to beat Hayden, they had been knocking on the door and continued for the rest of the half, but failed to increase their 1-0 lead for the interval.
Just five minutes after the restart Rovers threatened again, Hoare with another header this time it was straight at Hayden, he had to do well to keep it held in his gloves, they countered immediately but Leon Pohls came out of his area to clear.
Like in the opening half Rovers continued to knock on the door but failed to convert their chances, opportunities going wayward and missing the mark, Hoare did however double their lead midway through the half in rather fortuitous fashion, a free kick outside the area striking the face of a Bangor player and Hoare reacted quick to strike into an empty net.
The mountain getting higher for Bangor, 2-0 down after 67 minutes became 3-0 eight minutes later, Aidomo Emakhu with a burst of pace to split the defenders before he dinked over the on-rushing Hayden, that killed any momentum for the Crumlin outfit.
With eight minutes left Daniel Cleary added the fourth goal of the night, on his debut he left his mark with a thunderous finish to the back of the net, Bangor put to the sword but to their credit put in a great showing.
