No issues for UCD as they overcame Cockhill Celtic in Cup
UCD secured their first home win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Cockhill Celtic in the first round of the FAI Cup this evening.
Tommy Lonergan headed in for the Students on the half-hour mark just after the Buncrana side had a good chance go wide from the boot of James Breslin.
Lonergan would have his second moments later as he fired in from point-blank range.
UCD would net their third with 15 minutes remaining as Michael Gallagher headed in an Evan Caffrey corner to ensure victory at the Belfield Bowl.
UCD would net their third with 15 minutes remaining as Michael Gallagher headed in an Evan Caffrey corner to ensure victory at the Belfield Bowl.
UCD dominated possession from the off and allowed Cockhill very little space of their own.
Centre-back Sam Todd had a header tipped over the crossbar by the visitors' goalkeeper Daniel Houghton in the Students' first big chance on 13 minutes.
The impressive Houghton was called into action again moments later and made a similar save to keep his side from conceding.
Cockhill maintained an organised defence and limited their hosts to long-range efforts for a period after that. Lonergan, Sean Brennan and Dylan Duffy all had efforts from range fall wide of the target for UCD.
Celtic did struggle to get on the ball and forays forward from the visitors were few and far between.
Nevertheless, Cockhill nearly took the lead in the 28th minute.
A Corey McBride free-kick into the UCD area fell to Jason Breslin, who flicked it narrowly wide of Lorcan Healy's goal.
After that scare, the home side responded and soon went ahead.
An excellent Sean Brennan pass found Lonergan in the 18-yard box, and the forward headed past Houghton to open scoring on the half-hour mark.
Lonergan would net his second four minutes later, when Brennan delivered beautifully into the Cockhill area again and John Ryan brought it down for the forward to blaze in.
Dara Keane nearly made it 3-0 to the home team on 37 minutes but Houghton left his goal line in time to get in the way of the midfielder.
Another save from the 'keeper on Mark Dignam's header before half-time saw UCD remain two goals ahead at the break.
Cockhill came close to pulling a goal back early in the second-half when McBride spotted Healy off his line but his long-range attempt went narrowly wide.
The Students remained on top though, and came very close to scoring again on 53 minutes when defender Michael Gallagher got on the end of a corner but the defender hit wide.
There were very little scoring opportunities for either side after that, with Cockhill sitting deep in their half while the Students were content to sit on the lead.
They would notch their third goal on 75 minutes when Michael Gallagher again got on the end of a corner and the Donegal native headed it across the 'keeper to score and ensure UCD's advancement to the next round.
