Pat’s on top after extra-time battle
St Patrick’s Athletic are through to the quarter final, of the FAI Cup, after a dramatic 4-1 penalty shootout win over Cork City, in tonight’s second round meeting at Turners Cross.
In a tight game with both sides testing each other for 120 minutes, Pats thought the tie was won in the 89th minute, a penalty from Chris Forrester, but further drama ensued later in the second half as Barry Coffey managed to convert a goalmouth scramble to level the tie in the 95th minute, as the game went to spot kicks.
Chances were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes, Cork having much the better of the chances but failed to convert, as Pats had their backs to the walls in the opening half.
Cork's best opportunity of the tie fell to Dylan McGlade, the midfielder hitting a shot from 30 yards, but it was matched by an unbelievable save by Vitezslav Jaros, in the Saints Net. Alec Byrne also managed to sting the keeper's palms with a long shot.
Pats had a late chance to break the deadlock in the 85th minute, Mark McNulty doing well in the Cork net, to keep out a deflected Ben McCormack shot.
The Dubliners found the breakthrough in the 89th minute, Chris Forrester stepping up to convert from the penalty spot, leaving the travelling supporters celebrating in the corner.
No strangers to late goals, Cork managed to pull the tie back in the 95th minute, Barry Coffey on hand to finish a Cian Coleman header to send the game to extra-time.
With very few realistic efforts for scores coming in extra-time, both sides had to endure a penalty shootout, both Forrester and McGlade scored their opening penalties, before McCormack made it 2-1.
Coffey skied his penalty kick, Jason McClelland made no mistake scoring his spot kick to make it 3-1, Jaros on hand again for Pats, saving the next kick to keep it 3-1 in their favour.
The final kick went to Alfie Lewis, he stepped up and calmly finished it to make it a 4-1 penalty win for St Pats on the night.
