Second Half Salvo Helps City Overcome Treaty Challenge

Two second half goals from Josh Honohan and Tunde Owolabi helped Cork City to defeat Treaty United 2-0 at the Markets Field today.

After a cagey opening, City began to take control of proceedings with Barry Coffey proving to be particularly influential in midfield. Cian Bargary had the first chance for the visitors after five minutes when his cross nearly caught goalkeeper Conor Winn off his line.

Treaty to their credit, grew into the game and had an audacious moment of their own in the 22nd minute when Dean George's long range effort was almost deflected into the City net.

Treaty went closer again ten minutes later when the impressive Willie Armshaw hit the crossbar. With the game sparking into life at this stage, Coffey had a ball cleared off the line moments later as the sides went in level at the break.

Both sides traded periods of possession at the beginning of the second half before City got the breakthrough just before the hour mark. A terrific cross from Coffey found Josh Honohan whose powerful header beat Winn to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

City didn't have it all their own way however as George continued to cause problems while new signing Rokas Stanulevičius had to go off injured, adding to City's ever growing injury list.

As for the result however, the visitors managed to breath a little easier in the 76th minute with Tunde Owolabi doubled his side's lead with a clinical finish to make it 2-0 and end the game as a contest.

The game fizzled out from there as both managers rang the changes with Fionn Doherty a noteworthy introduction for the hosts as he came on to make his first appearance since March.

As one player made a comeback, another was sent off for Treaty as Darren Nwankwao was sent off for a second yellow deep into injury time to compound a dissappointing second half for Tommy Barrett's side.

It was Cork's day however as they picked up their first win in five games to advance to the next round while last year's semi-finalists exited at the first hurdle.
