Dundalk and Levadia draw in Euro cracker

Dundalk and Levadia served up a European game to remember as the sides drew 2-2 in the Tallaght Stadium. In a first half that was a game that showed the best of what Dundalk can offer on this stage but also a real indication of the quality of this team under manager Vinny Perth.

The second leg and an opportunity to face Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in the next round is firmly is still on the cards for both clubs and with away goals scrapped it will be a shoot out to see who will face the Eredivisie side.

The 1000 fans in Tallaght had barely taken their seats when both sides scored in the space of 73 seconds of each other.

Levadia's first attack of the night saw a cross from the right sent into Bogdan Vaštšuk who slotted home from close range with a clinical finish. Dundalk broke from the restart and Will Patching got the ball on the edge of the area and hit an unstoppable shot past Vallner to level it up.

The Louth men continued to push hard, and the away side looked dangerous on the counter-attack with a focus on exploiting Jurkovskis high press.

Levadia took the lead once more when Zahibo lost the ball in the centre of the park and with his second goal Vaštšuk latched onto the through ball and clipped it over Abibi. This advantage would only last a paltry five minutes as Dundalk drew level. A cross from Jurkovskis was met by McMillan's cool touch and a shot which he slotted past Vallner.

The second half saw Levadia control the early exchanges that saw a fantastic save from Abibi who denied Zakaria Beglarishvili. That was the best chance for the away side as Dundalk began to take charge of proceeds.

Despite ample attacks on goal and a series of corners, they couldn’t make them count. Patrick McEleney and Stanton linked up well and McEleney's shot got a deflection and went wide. In addition, second-half substitute Greg Sloggett had the best chance as his snapshot on the edge of the area curled just wide of the post.

McEleney nearly had a chance to snatch the win as he ghosted past four players before his right-footed effort was well saved by Vallner.

Dundalk will have nothing to fear as they head to the Estonian capital next week, but will know that this side is for the taking if they perform like they did tonight. Dundalk of old has begun to spring eternal? Time will tell.

  • HALF TIME: Exhilarating, breathtaking, charged, electric this game has had it all so far. Four goals, penalty calls and a blistering start for all to see. There is a lot more to this and it's going to be so hard to call.

Kelly stops the attack from Levadia with a foul and the referee has no option but to give him a yellow.

  • And here come the teams. Genuinely as a reporter and a fan this is fantastic, fans in full voice and the place despite only 1000 people they are making their presence known. This has been a long time coming.

  • Tonight’s ref is Miroslav Zelinka from the Czech Republic. He has previously reffed a Dundalk game in Europe - the 2-1 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg here in Tallaght Stadium in October 2016.

  • There is only one thing to say tonight...The HEAT! It's 24 degrees but its a very dead heat and will be a big factor in this tie.

  • With Michael Duffy, Daniel Cleary, Brian Gartland and Patrick Hoban all missing, not one of tonight's Dundalk squad featured when the Lilywhites beat Levadia 3-1 over two legs in 2018. Maksim Podholjuzin is the one survivor from the Levadia team starting tonight
