Match Report

Lone goal sees Dundalk beat Harps

Dundalk recorded their first win over Finn Harps this season after a first half goal from David McMillan and his 90th for the club overall gave the Lilywhites a 1-0 victory in Oriel Park.

In a match that was played in very hot conditions in the hottest day of the year it was the in form McMillan who made the difference for Vinny Perth’s side.

Before this week Perth had spoken of getting the ‘old Dundalk back’ and that was in evidence today as Finn Harps had to deal with a series of attacks and it was more of Dundalk’ being wasteful in front of goal than Finn Harps who did defend very well.

The first of the Lilywhites chances fell to Raivis Jurkovskis who received the ball out on the right and instead of crossing, he opted to test the keeper with a volley that struck the side netting. David McMillan headed wide as did Jurkovskis as Dundalk continued to pile on the pressure but to no avail.

McMillan did break the deadlock as Patrick McEleney pressed forward who fed the ball to Jurkovskis whose effort was blocked by McGinley and the ball fell kindly to McMillan to slot home his 90th goal in Dundalk colours to make him now in the top five league goalscorer for the club.

Finn Harps best chance of the half came when a Barry McNamee free-kick was sent into the area and Kos Sadiki headed goalwards at the back post but it was saved by Alessio Abibi.

Both sides continued to press in the second half with Dundalk creating chances from a series of corners but McGinley was equal to them.

Harps had a chance to equalise as McNamee corner saw Abibi spill it at the back post but Dundalk's Andy Boyle cleared the danger. McNamee was again on hand to test Abibi as he gathered the ball on the edge of the area but his low effort was saved well.

In difficult conditions that could not have been easy for both teams, Dundalk taking the points is a welcome boost as the fear of a ‘European wobble’ is always a threat with such a run of games. The Lilywhites face Estonian side FCI Levadia Tallinn next week in Tallaght while Finn Harps host Bohemians.
