Match Report

Waterford Scale the Walls of Derry

Waterford long road to Derry proved fruitful as Derry City’s pressure is further mounting after losing in the Brandywell today. Despite knocking on the door and having ample possession for large periods of the game Declan Devine toothless frontline lacked the bite to take the game to Waterford.

Derry City looked to take on the full advantage of being home with early indications that Jack Malone and Will Patching looking to exert their influence on the game. The first shot on goal came from a Will Patching pass who laid the ball off to Ciaron Harkin who hit a fantastic shot that Barry Murphy was equal to but the home side showing they were intending to win.

While both sides ensued in a midfield tussle Will Patching once again sent a clever ball into the area with pace and speed that Lupano was lirking at the back post and the ball just evaded the player and went wide.

It was however the visitors who took the lead. Waterford was awarded a freekick from Shane Griffin executed it with a perfectly placed ball that curled around the wall and Gartside was left standing as it flew past him and into the net.

While the visitors took the lead and you have to say that was against the run of play. Derry created a couple of half-chances with Will Patching striking a free-kick that didn’t trouble the experienced Barry Murphy. The ensuing press saw Derry equalise, Will Patching once again using his prowess from a set-piece whipped a clever ball in from the left and Conor McJannett stealing in at the back post after evading his marked to slot it home from close range. Derry went into the half time team talk with their tales up as Declan Devine's men responded well after the concession of the goal.

Any idea of Waterford was going to roll over were diminished within the first sixty seconds of the second half when Prince forced Gartside into a smart save to sting the hands under the gloves long-range effort. Conor McJannett fed the ball to Will Fitzgerald and the former Waterford man nearly came back to haunt his old team but his effort just went wide.

Nathan Gartside who had been impressive for the majority of the game had a rush of blood to the head, he took down the onrushing Shane Griffin following a short back pass and the referee had no option but to point to the spot. While he denied Oscar Brennan initially but saving his penalty the ball was parried back in his direction and the Waterford man had no hesitation tapping the ball into the empty net to put his side back in the lead.

Derry City looked on course to get an equaliser as Thomson struck a fine volley only for Barry Murphy to use all his experience to tip it over the bar. As both clubs rung in the changes trying to produce an impact on the game it was Will Patching who had a wonderful chance for the home side as the ball fell to him on the edge of the area but he blazes the effort over. This was followed by McJannett heading the ball wide as he attempted to add to his goal tally on the night.

Waterford was reduced to ten men as goalscorer Oscar Brennan committed two fouls ninety seconds apart that saw his game-ending prematurely. The midfield took down Kyle Lafferty inside the Waterford half and was given a yellow card and just moments later a late lunge on Will Patching saw the referee have no choice but to send him off for two cynical fouls.

With the numerical advantage, Derry took the game to Waterford and they had a great chance at the death to take a point from the contest. The first came when another great cross into the area saw Akintunde’s header flash wide however it would not have counted as it was offside.

While there have been discussions of the board and manager having pressure heaped on Derry City at the moment, Waterford and Kevin Sheedy will leave a much-relieved man as his side make their way home.

Derry has the envious task of facing Shamrock Rovers next, they don’t come much bigger than that.

Second Half: And Waterford gets us back underway here in Derry.

  • 45'

Half Time and it's been the free-kicks that have been the difference. Shane Giffin opened the scoring with an excellently taken free-kick. Will Patchings free-kick just on the stroke of half time saw Cameron McJannett strike at the back post. An entertaining first half in periods.

  • 45'

And Derry are level! A Will Patching free-kick is whipped in from the left and McJannett stole in at the back post to slot it home!

  • 41'

Patching with the free-kick that Murphy gathers with ease, in reality, it was weak enough and Patching should be doing better from that range.

  • 29'

And what a strike! A freekick from Griffin curls excellently around the wall and Gartside was left standing. The visitors take the lead and you have to say that was against the run of play.

  • 28'

A fantastic delivery from Will Patching into the area with pace and speed and Lupano was at the back post and it just evaded him.

Not much to report here in the last few minutes, it's a very tight affair here with Derry looking the more promising with some quick movement going forward.

  • 16'

From the short corner, Will Patching laid the ball off to Ciaron Harkin who strikes a fantastic shot with venom that Barry Murphy does very well to keep a hold of.

  • 14'

  • 1'

And Derry City gets us underway at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

  • Crowd noise and 'Enter Sandman' blaring over the PA? The Brandywell has everything tonight!

  • Kevin Sheedy and his team will make the long 401 km trip to Derry knowing they are in for a battle but will take confidence from the fact that they created a number of good opportunities to score against Sligo. Waterford will look to convert these opportunities and get a positive result in the Brandywell this this evening.

  • While Derry has had only one game, they will be disappointed with their showing in the loss against Premier division newcomers Longford town. As for Waterford they will have been encouraged by the number of chances created against Sligo last Friday night, they were again left pointless.

  • Good Afternoon and you are very welcome to this afternoons coverage of Derry City and Waterford. With both sides currently on zero points, this is the perfect game to get the season off and running.
