Match Report

Akintunde grabs draw for Derry

James Akintunde’s last gasp equaliser rescued Derry City a draw at home to Longford Town at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium this evening.

The away side broke the deadlock on 75 minutes through Rob Manley, after the striker managed to latch on to a long ball and poke it past a helpless Nathan Gartside.

Manley’s strike came against the run of play, as Derry had dominated the contest throughout, having much of the possession, territory, and best chances.

Nevertheless, Longford looked to have secured their first win since the opening day of the season, as their resilient defence looked to have secured three precious points in their fight for survival.

But in the 92nd minute, a long desperate ball was fired into the box and the ball eventually fell to Akintunde, who made no mistake in rescuing his side a priceless point.

The best chance of an uneventful first half fell to Eoin Toal, whose header from a Will Patching corner was cleared off the line.

Patching had a shot from distance that forced a decent stop from Longford goalkeeper Michael Kelly, and the rebound was squandered by striker David Parkhouse who couldn’t connect to the loose ball.

Parkhouse had another great chance 10 minutes later, as his header from a Patching cross looked destined to find the corner of the net, but a remarkable save from Kelly kept the scores level.

Derry’s relentless pressure continued as they desperately tried to find the opener and thought they should have had a penalty.

‘Man of the Match’ Akintunde looked to have been fouled in the box after brilliantly gliding through the Longford defence, and when he was through on goal looked to have been tripped up, but the referee waved away the appeals.

The result leaves Derry in seventh place for the time being, on nine points picked up from 10 games.

Longford lie in ninth position, one point behind Derry and are just one point clear of bottom side Waterford, who are away to Sligo Rovers tomorrow.

    We're underway

  • The last time the two teams faced off was on the opening day of the season, with Longford running out 2-0 winner’s courtesy of goals from Grimes and Joe Gorman.

  • They come into this match off the back of a 2-all draw at home to Dundalk, in which they threw away three priceless points by conceding a late equaliser from Chris Shields. The newly promoted side lie second from bottom in ninth position and are only above bottom club Waterford on goal difference.

  • Dylan Grimes is their top goal scorer with three goals and will likely continue to be Longford’s most potent attacking threat.

  • Struggling Longford have picked up just six points from a maximum 27 so far this season and have the worst defence in the division, conceding 15 goals already this term.

  • This season, Cameron McJannett, despite being a centre back, has been the Candystripes best attacking outlet, as the defender has managed to score five goals in just nine appearances.

  • Under new manager Ruaidhri Higgins, City have picked up just eight points from nine games so far this season, winning just once. They come into this match off the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Finn Harps, in which Adam Foley’s goal 90 seconds from time broke their passionate supporters’ hearts.

  • Both sides will be desperate for a win after poor starts to the season, putting each club at risk of relegation.

  • The weather in Derry is currently 10 degrees Celsius with very little chance of rain and a slight wind.
