Mochta’s on top in LSL battle in FAI Cup

St. Mochta’s became one of the names among the final 16 of the FAI Cup, after beating Crumlin United with a 2-1 win at CBS Armagh Road this afternoon.

The show between both Leinster Senior League sides just needed 90 minutes to see the visitors going through in the competition, with Michael Daly and former Drogheda United player Gareth McCaffrey grabbing the golden ticket during the first half.

Crumlin kept battling with the hosts grabbing a 93rd-minute goal, from Glen Fulham but it was mere consolation.

The Saints from Porterstown Road brought an early goal from the dressing room, as Michael Daly took five minutes to slot in Alex O’Hanlon’s cross from a corner.

St. Mochta’s were all over the pitch exploiting Crumlin’s fragility at the back, and got their second in the 22nd minute; A bad approach to a ball by Crumlin's defence let McCaffrey race through, coming face to face with Michael Quinn, as he put it past the goalkeeper with a cold finish.

The Crumlin Boys found all their ways to Craig Hyland’s box closed during the first half and got even down to ten men before forcing the opponent goalkeeper to a save.

Liam Brady and Jamie Whelan left the sides down to ten men as they both saw a straight red card after some nasty challenges close to the break.

The advantage achieved before the break brought a comfortable St. Mochta’s into the second 45 minutes, as they easily held out Crumlin’s shy reaction by abdicating some pieces in the attack to protect the score.

The hosts just found some space to shake the foundations after the 78th minute, when Jake Walker saw enough space to clip it over Craig Hyland, but ball went slightly over the line.

Fulham turned the final embers into a nervy finish with a late goal, as he made the net bounce in the 93rd minute, but too late to force the extra 30 minutes.

Crumlin stepped up in the second half, but ultimately the final whistle confirmed St. Mochta’s deserved access to the next round in the competition.
