Match Report

First half brace powers Galway win

A first half brace powered Galway WFC to impressive win away to Cork City at Turners Cross in the WFL this afternoon.

The visitors were much the better side creating many chances in the opening quarter of the game. Chloe Moloney opened the scoring with a fine header.

Aoife Thompson also found the net with her head, after a fantastic ball in from Shauna Brennan. Cork never got into the game creating very little going forward, which they will be very disappointed in.

Galway started off the game the brightest with good attempts early on being saved by Cork Keeper Abby McCarthey one of which was an incredible save tipping the ball onto the post.

The visitors continued to cause mayhem in the Cork defence by getting the ball in behind the Rebels high line.

The game itself was fiery with hard tackles coming in from both sides. Sinead Donovan's heavy tackle 20 minutes in went unpunished and led to a Galway corner, which subsequently resulted in their opening goal.  Chloe Moloney headed the ball into the back of the net, a scoreline that Galway fully deserved.

Things got worse for Cork four minutes later when a brilliant ball in from Shauna Brennan was met by Aoife Thompson with an excellent diving header.

Cork didn't pose much threat going forward. Any break away they made was cut out by the Galway defence. Savannah McCarthy was fantastic in the middle of the park breaking up Cork attacks and launching Galway forward - a player of the match performance.

2-0 down at the break, Cork came out with more enthusiasm and fight in the second half, but got no return on their efforts.

The latter stages of the second half was very stop-start with Cork sustaining injuries and both sides using all available subs. Cork after making all their subs received another injury resulting in them playing out the last 10 minutes down to 10.

Galway will be happy with the result on the road and especially delighted with their defensive display with keeper Maja Zajc not having to make any saves of note.

Cork can take positives from the second half keeping a clean sheet and decent spells of possession although their attacking output will need to improve going forward.
