Keane and Whelan deliver for UCD
Second half strikes courtesy of Dara Keane and a Colm Whelan spot-kick sealed all three points for UCD at St Colman’s Park.
Cobh Ramblers fell to a 2-0 defeat to The Student’s Club this evening in the League of Ireland First Division.
UCD almost opened the scoring inside the first two minutes when Liam Kerrigan’s ball found the on rushing Whelan inside the box. Thankfully for the hosts, his effort bounced off the crossbar and out.
In what was a relatively quiet and well matched first half, Cobh Ramblers best opportunity came through a Jason Abbott free kick which was saved well by Lorcan Healy in the UCD net.
Darren Murphy’s half time team talk must have really influenced his side as Cobh came out at a ferocious pace after the interval. Nathan O’Connell’s inch perfect through ball was met by wide man Conor Drinan but he put his effort straight at Lorcan Healy in what was possibly Ramblers’ best chance of the evening.
UCD grew into the second period gradually and should have gone in front through Whelan. The league’s top scorer found himself with the ball at his feet just yards from the Cobh net but his effort was saved brilliantly by Sean Barron.
With just over 20 minutes to play, the referee awarded a penalty to the guests after he judged Barron to have fouled a UCD player inside his six yard box following a dangerous Evan Weir corner.
Whelan stood up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner past Barron who guessed the right way.
The UCD goal made the home side push higher up the pitch to try and search for that all important equaliser. With Cobh pushing for a winner, this left gaps in behind their defence.
Substitute Dara Keane was set through on goal after an excellent turn past Coleman, the UCD man fired the ball into the back of the net past the helpless Barron to seal all three points for the Dublin side.
Cobh Ramblers travel to Maynooth University Town next week in the FAI Cup second round while UCD play host to Premier Division side Longford Town at The Bowl.
