Shels treble ensures win in Stradbrook

Shelbourne cruised to an easy 3-1 victory at Stradbrook Road with goals from Shane Farrell, Michael and Kevin O’Connor.

Shels dominated the entire game using slick passing and quickness to constantly give Cabinteely trouble.

Farrell particularly had a wonderful game, which he capped with a 39th minute wonder goal from 25 yards.

Cabinteely netted through Jem Campion, but it was too little too late, as he and his teammates, now look to rebound after yet another bad loss; while Shelbourne will be happy with another victory to maintain their undefeated start.

The first half was initially a cagey affair with both teams looking to just play balls over the top to try and make the most of the space behind the others defence. Jordan Payne for Cabinteely seemed quite happy with this strategy as his speed occasionally proved difficult for Shelbourne to handle.

It wasn’t until 26th minute that things kicked into action as a wonderful ball through to Shelbourne’s Glen McCauley forced Dean Casey to come across and make a hasty tackle which brought down McCauley in the box; and Shelbourne were immediately awarded with a penalty. Michael O’Connor stepped up and easily dispatched the resulting place-kick, to give Shelbourne the lead.

From there the game opened up at a bit more, with both teams playing some nice attacking football. Casey was on the lookout to make up for his earlier mistake, and had a nice moment down the wing, which resulted in him cutting inside before having his shot land safely in the gloves of Brendan Clarke.

Casey’s positional switch to left back from left midfield was showing, as Shelbourne looked to attack down his wing as frequently as possible. This proved fruitful once again in the 39th minute as a Brendan Clarke goal kick found Shane Farrell, who took the ball around Casey with his first touch; before hitting a beautiful looping shot into the top corner of Adam Hayden’s net to make it 2-0 to Shelbourne.

That second goal really gave Shels a chokehold on their game, and as they finished the first half it didn’t look like Cabinteely would be putting up much of a resistance against them.

After the break the game continued at much of the same pace with Cabinteely struggling to get both possession and men forward, whilst Shelbourne seemed content to just restrict Cabinteely and wait for a moment to strike going forward.

It wasn’t until the 81st minute that Cabinteely were handed something of a lifeline; as Maxim Kouogan’s attempted clearance looped high into the air allowing Campion to loop in behind the defence to land a perfectly looped header over Brendan Clarke to bring some respectability to the score.

In the end though it was all in vain as the Reds were able to close out the game and secure the victory that keeps them in the race for the top and undefeated for the season.
