Match Report
Galway deliver in Stradbrook
Galway United took all three points after a hectic second half with Cabinteely in Stradbrook, which saw two red cards and a dramatic penalty save from Luke Dennison with his first touch of the game.
Mikie Rowe's strike from a well worked set piece after 56 minutes which broke the deadlock, and was ultimately the score that separated the sides.
After 10 minutes Galway started to get a foothold in the game pushing the hosts back with good build up play and long balls from Conor Kearns in goal and set pieces from all angles landing in the Cabinteely box, but nothing coming of it.
The midway point of the first half saw the sides level out with nothing major in terms of chances but some brilliant passages of play. The defences did well cutting out any attacking opportunities.
35 minutes in Cabo turned up the pressure on Galway creating chances although nothing major apart from Ben Feeney's strike being caught easily by the United keeper.
After an entertaining attacking first half it ended surprisingly 0-0.
The Tribesmen came out for the second half red hot causing all sorts of issues for Cabo.
This pressure paid off after one of Galway's many set pieces finally paid off a nice set piece routine finished off softly by Rowe to put the away side 1-0 up.
After this there was a flurry of cards, Eoin McPhillips who was booked for the Galway set piece, which lead to the opening goal; was soon given his marching orders by Referee Eoghan O'Shea with two bookings in under 10 minutes for McPhillips.
As the home side pressed with ten men they soon were rewarded for their work, as they received a penalty goalkeeper Conor Kearns high knee colliding with Kieran Marty Waters in the area, Kearns was also sent off seeing both sides down to ten men with 20 minutes to play, We hope Waters recovers from what looked to be a nasty head injury.
Luke Dennison made a name for himself in the hearts of the Tribesmen supporters as he came off the bench to save a crucial penalty, his first involvement of the match and how crucial it turned out to be.
Galway were content to play on the counter from this point on with 15 minutes remaining they defended their three points excellently and prevented Cabinteely from snatching a draw - a result they possibly deserved.
The game finished 1-0 thanks to United missing an open goal with the last kick of the game as the trailing side committed all their men to their last corner. John Caulfield and all his staff and team can be delighted to take all three points back West.
