Match Report

Match Preview: Cabinteely v Galway United

Last season Cabinteely fans and players were dreaming big, after qualifying for the promotion play offs. However, those dreams were shattered as they lost two points due to Wexford Youths fielding an ineligible player. The team that replaced them - Galway United, are their opponents in the capital tonight.

Keith Dalton's deflected effort on 56 minutes was enough to give Cabinteely all three points at home to Cork City last Friday and, by extension, preserve their 100 per cent start to the new SSE Airtricity League First Division season.
2-1 winners at the expense of Wexford the week before, the Stradbrook Road outfit squeezed in front when a Dalton delivery was diverted home by helpless City centre-half George Heaven

Despite their best endeavours in the south Dublin venue, the Leesiders couldn’t break down the hosts and suffered an early blow to their promotion hopes.

City’s starting line-up showed two changes from the side that secured a 2-1 win over Cobh Ramblers at Turner’s Cross the previous Friday; but that does not take away how convincing Cabinteely looked.

They dusted off their promotion shortfall last season by agreeing to drop an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the FAI after talks with the association and will reach for the stars again.

Both teams would see themselves as promotion rivals. United have failed to climb up the First Division league table over the last few weeks, only gaining a point from the opening two games.

With several signings made during the off-season, Caulfield is yet to see his developing outfit deliver.

Galway United are still seeking to gel their new defensive unit with the departure of Jack Lynch, one of the key men in their surge to the First Division play-off final in November. Lynch has left to pursue a new project with Treaty United.

One good result and the season could be a hopeful one for Galway as they have the right coaching staff.
