Match Report
Shels look good away to Bray
Shelbourne eased Bray aside in a comfortable 4-1 victory in the First Division this evening at the Carlisle Grounds.
A Ryan Brennan double and goals from Luke Byrne and a Michael O Connor penalty ensured Shels kept their five-point lead at the top of the table.
With just under two minutes on the clock, Bray’s Brian Maher was called into action with an excellent save to deny Kev O'Connor from close range. Shortly after Mark Byrne was dispossessed in his own half by Shane Farrell who raced down the right wing, before being brought down by Bray captain Aaron Barry for a penalty.
Mark O Connor stepped up and fired the ball past Maher in the Bray goal to give Ian Morris’ men an early lead.
Their advantage was short lived after Dylan Barnett was fouled in the Shelbourne area to give the Wicklow side a penalty of their own. Midfielder Conor Clifford calmly stood up and scored past Clarke to level the score.
Just before the interval George Poynton put a dangerous free kick into the Bray box which the home side failed to deal with. This allowed Liam Brennan to nod home from close range against his former side. Shelbourne went in at half-time 2-1 up.
Gary Cronin’s men came out fighting in the early minutes of the second half. Ryan Graydon caused the Shels defence all sorts of trouble but sadly couldn’t find that last killer pass.
With just under half an hour remaining, Shelbourne countered against the run of play. After a handball in the Bray box, they were awarded their second penalty of the game. This time Ryan Brennan took the place-kick and made no mistake to despatch it to the top right corner past Maher.
Shelbourne then scored their fourth of the game with under five minutes to play, thanks to Luke Byrne’s clever finish at the front post from a Shelbourne corner.
It ended 4-1 to Shelbourne as they extended their unbeaten run to 11 games.
