Bohs draw in Iceland

Bohemians go into next week’s second leg full of confidence after drawing the first leg of their UEFA European Conference League qualifier 1-1 in Iceland.

The visitors were the better team throughout the contest and will be roared on next week in front of 6,000 fans at the Aviva Stadium.

Bohs started the game the better of the two sides and had the game’s first chance through Player of the Match Liam Burt, who Stjarnan struggled to contain throughout the tie.

Burt had a powerful volley from the right of the penalty box well saved by the Stjarnan goalkeeper Haraldur Bjornsson.

However, the game’s first goal was completely against the run of play as the home side took the lead through centre forward Emil Atlason.

A good delivery from Hilmar Arni Halldorsson from the left was rewarded with a header from close range by Atlason, who scored his fifth goal of the season.

That score gave the hosts a confidence boost, and they went close minutes later through Larus Gudmundsson, who went through one on one after Rory Feely slipped but goalkeeper James Talbot was quick off his line to make a good save.

Bohemians continued to dominate possession throughout but struggled to create clear cut chances and to get their top goal scorer Georgie Kelly into the game.

The visitors were level just past the hour mark as Dawson Devoy picked up the ball in the final third and his shot at goal was deflected and fell to full back Tyreke Wilson, who turned the ball in from close range.

Stjarnan striker Oliver Haurits had a good chance towards the end as he capitalised on Feely’s poor clearance and the following strike at goal narrowly missed the target.

Bohs continued to push to find a winner but both sides will happily settle for the draw, going into next Thursday’s second leg.

  • The Irish side come into the game off the back of a 3-2 victory against St Patrick’s Athletic, in which top goal scorer Georgie Kelly increased his tally to 12 goals for the season. Kelly’s potent form in front of goal was rewarded as he was recently named the Soccer Writers Ireland SSE Airtricity Player of the Month for June.
