Shels are First Division champs
Shelbourne are officially SSE Airtricity League First Division Champions after they secured a 1-0 win over Treaty United at Tolka Park tonight thanks to a second half penalty from George Poynton.
Ian Morris’ side will be playing in the Premier Division next season.
The game started off as a fairly dull contest. Both sides were struggling to create any real chances as they tested each other out.
It was eventually the hosts who started to take control of the game and called Treaty United ‘keeper, Tadhg Ryan into action and made a number of great saves in the first half.
Shels were in control at the end of the first half and looked the most likely to take the lead.
Michael O’Connor was causing problems for the away side’s defence and if he had his shooting boots on he could have easily been on the scoresheet. However, his shots seemed to be easy for Ryan to deal with.
Brendan Clarke was forced into making a wonderful save in the 63rd minute from point blank range and kept his side level.
Less than ten minutes later they were ahead from a Poynton penalty. Shane Farrell was brought down in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
There were some heroic clearances and tackles in the last fifteen minutes that helped the hosts hold onto their narrow lead.
Morris will be delighted with his side’s performance against a hard working Treaty United team.
Tommy Barrett will be disappointed that his players could not spoil the party for the Reds, but they could still see themselves finish in a play-off spot.
Shelbourne have secured their status as First Division Champions and they will be a Premier Division side next year.
A great night for the North Dublin side and the fans were clearly ecstatic as they made their way onto the pitch after the full time whistle to celebrate their team’s victory.
