Match Report

Treaty grab valuable point in Galway

10-man Treaty United held on to secure a valuable point away to fellow promotion hopefuls Galway United.

Marc Ludden picked up two second-half yellow cards in a extremely even game up until that point. Tadhg Ryan had earlier denied Mikie Rowe and Wilson Waweru a crucial lead goal.

As with the previous meetings this season, this was an ultra tight affair. Treaty were hoping to build on their 3-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers while the hosts may still have had eyes on Shelbourne prior to kick-off. The Dubliners victory on Leeside means that the in-direct route will have to suffice for pre-season title favourites Galway.

Results now mean that Galway and Treaty must focus on building towards the imminent play-offs, with a handful of games left to play.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half but Treaty contained the early energy shown by Wilson Waweru and Ruairi Keating. For Tommy Barrett’s side Seán McSweeney looked sharp, having returned to his familiar ‘number 10’ role, behind the returning Kieran Hanlon.

On his first start for Galway, Luke Dennison was underworked in the opening half. But, he was merely a spectator as Anto O’Donnell headed wide from a wonderful Charlie Fleming cross.

O’Donnell also cleared off the line at the other end, after a corner ricocheted around the Treaty area. John Caulfield’s side clearly targeted long-throws and deep corners, causing problems for Tadhg Ryan at times.

Ryan was at his agile best when batting away a piledriver from Mikie Rowe on 33. Gary Boylan came close before the interval as Ryan initially spilled the long-range shot, but had the wherewithal to gather at the second attempt.

An early yellow for Ludden moments into the second half was compounded when he got his marching orders on 72. He raced into a tackle and caught Gary Boylan, enough for Kevin O’Sullivan to dismiss the ex-Galway United man. Despite the man less, Anto O'Donnell almost won it for the Limerick men, heading over as the game entered stoppage time.

Who would rule out a fourth meeting of these sides in 2021, as both look assured of their play-off place with just five League games remaining?
