Waweru breaks Bray hearts
Wison Waweru broke Bray hearts as he latched onto a long Conor McCormack ball to beat Brian Maher and give Galway all three points to clinch second position in the First Division at Eamon Deacy Park.
The Tribesmen dominated the early stages of the opening half with Ruari Keating and Waweru forcing Ireland under 21 shot-stopper into multiple saves including a great reaction stop from Joe Gorman as he headed McCormacks free kick goalward on the quarter hour mark.
The away side grew into the game as the minutes ticked on with Joe Doyle coming close for the Wicklow outfit.
To the dismay of the home crowd, Sean Callan avoided a yellow card for a full-blooded challenge on Keating just after the half hour mark as the referee awarded the maroon army a throw in, the fans letting the ref know what they thought especially as David Hurley received a soft yellow moments earlier.
As half time approached, both sides had clear cut chances, sloppy play and as many as three poor attempts to clear the ball allowed Waweru to nick the ball on the right and play a perfect ball into the path of Keating to drove the ball high over the bar.
At the other end Sam Verdon forced Galway netminder Conor Kearns into an excellent save almost at full stretch.
Bray started the second half strong as the Westerners emerged for the second half without Keating who was unable to continue following the earlier challenge.
Both keepers were worked in the opening moments with Waweru forcing Maher into a save while Kearns at the other end watched as the ball flew past his post.
Bray almost came unstuck when Luka Lovic attempted some Zidane-esque trickery only to lose out and unintentionally set up a Galway counter attack on the hour mark.
The Wanderers lifted their play with Stephen Kinsella coming so close it was harder to miss while Joe Doyle's teammates didn’t keep up as he raced down the wing crossing the ball into the box which was only occupied by Galway men.
The breakthrough came with little under 10 minutes to play as Wareu latched onto a long McCormack ball, beating Maher in the process and slotting the ball into the empty net.
Bray didn’t give up with substitute Gary Shaw coming close however, it was The Tribesmen who finished strongest to seal all 3 points.
The final round of normal season games before both sides head into the playoffs with UCD and Treaty take place next weekend as Bray make the trip down the coast to bottom side Wexford, while travel to face manager John Caulfields former side Cork city at Turners Cross.
