Cobh craft victory over Cabo
Goals from Danny O’Connell and Jake Hegarty ended Cobh Rambler’s 10-game winless streak with a 2-1 win at Stradbrook tonight against Cabinteely in the First Division.
Darren Murphy’s men were defensively solid in a scrappy and physical game that had very few clear-cut chances.
Cabinteely kept pushing, with Alex Aspil grabbing a goal, but it only provided mere consolation.
Darren Murphy’s men were defensively solid in a scrappy and physical game that had very few clear-cut chances.
Cabo dominated possession during the opening periods of the game but it was the visitors that provided the first chance of the evening, when James McCarthy found space in the box only to blast the ball high over the bar.
Just three minutes later Ramblers would get the opener. Cabinteely captain Daniel Blackbyrne misplaced a pass to set a Cobh counter-attack in motion. Danny O’Connell managed to stay on his feet before dinking the ball over Harry Halwax.
Cobh looked happy to sit back and allow Pat Devlin’s side to play in front of them. Cabinteely struggled to break down their low block and went into the break a goal down and lacking inspiration.
The hosts looked more up for it after the restart, upping the pace and intensity of the game.
Chances were still at a premium, but Eoin McPhillips was denied a wonder goal from distance, when a backpedaling Sean Barron managed to tip his effort over the bar.
Jake Hegarty would go close for Cobh, wrestling off a Cabo defender before dragging his shot wide. However, the Ballinacurra native would redeem himself just a minute later when he doubled The Rams’s lead with a brilliant header.
Large parts of the second-half were scrappy. The game was played at a slow pace. Despite their lead Darren Murphy's side continued to pursue a third goal, but came to no avail.
Only in the final five minutes would Cabinteely apply any pressure, culminating in an injury-time goal from substitute Alex Aspil. Aspil found himself with an empty net after a great driving run and cut-back from Conor Knight.
The result means that both Cobh and Cabinteely are now level on points with 22 each. Ramblers host Shels next week, while Cabo will make the trip to Bray.
